There are 23 comments on A Plan for Making Up Snow-Canceled Classes

  1. Will dinning halls be open at 7 am on these Saturdays? And will the BU Bus run on a standard week day schedule? My concern is that the provost did not think about these little details and many students will be put into awkward situations. The whole situation seems rushed.

    1. The residence dining halls and the BU Bus will operate on a normal weekday schedule on Saturday, February 28 and Saturday, March 21.

    1. You’re paying for an education, have had your valuable class time cancelled, and now you’re complaining that BU is offering to make good on your purchase?

That’s like buying an iPhone, having it break on you, and complaining when Apple offers to replace it.

      1. No, people are complaining because they have schedules set in place and this disrupts it. It’s like when people were complaining that they might cancel spring break to make up the days. People have already payed for their spring break and didn’t want those plans cancelled. Similarly, people have already made arrangements for their saturdays and don’t want those plans altered. It’s really not that hard to see why someone would be upset. Some people are juggling lives outside of school.

    2. Maybe if you read the full article, Annoyed, you would not have a reason to be “annoyed”. Exceptions are in place for students with other commitments. BU is doing their best in a difficult situation. You should try doing the same.

  2. What about the classes that are already scheduled for Saturdays? Will they be bumped out of their normal assigned classrooms? Will this be arranged ahead of time so that there aren’t any issues on the Saturdays?

It should also be noted that none of the Monday night classes have met, yet. The first Monday was when BU CRC closed at 5:00. That means that three Monday sessions have been missed.

    1. Regular Saturday classes will remian int heir normal rooms. BU will find alternative rooms for the Monday or Tuesday classes that would otherwise meet in those rooms and they will communicate the new rooms to faculty ahead of time. The memo sent out by the Provost yesterday noted that, with regard to evening classes, “faculty may add time to evening classes over the course of the semester, so long as doing so does not conflict with other scheduled classes using the same facilities.”

  3. I suggest that you take advantage of all the technology available and arrange web conferences for lecture classes. There’s always Go to Meeting abd Webex for ease of making up the lost class time.

  4. “We hope that these opportunities for faculty and students to meet enables full consideration of all the material that was initially included in the syllabus,”..false hope, 5 snow days and only 2 make up dates…to cover full material????

  5. The questions about practical details are good, but the complaints about “fairness”, “disruptions” etc. are infuriating!! You’ve probably seen this man in the news: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/james-robertson-detroit-man-walks-nearly-21-miles-to-work-gets-help-for-new-car/

I realize most BU students (and their parents) feel fortunate to have the opportunity to attend college, and are resilient enough to deal with unexpected. As a parent and manager, I’d hire a person with perfect attendance who walked 21 miles to work in a heartbeat, versus an entitled whiner with a degree.

  6. I am a regular reader of BU Today – love the stories! The comments about the weather and rescheduling of classes are hilarious!

Half want BU to close campus earlier…
Half want BU to remain open…

Half have complained that they have missed “X” days of classes – and BU should reschedule…
Half have said they don’t need or want classes to be made up…

When BU closed, half complained the administration wasn’t responding fast enough with a makeup plan…
And half didn’t want to give up any free or vacation time…

Half have complained that the MED Campus should have remained open…
Half have complained that the MED Campus should have closed earlier…

Half have complained that certain employees should report to work…
Have have complained that certain employees should stay home…

You are big boys and big girls now – HTFU!

The statement “Do you know how much money I and/or my parents pay for me to go to BU?” is old and weak.

If this is such a horrible place…
If your classes and the scheduling is so unbearable…
If you are not getting your money’s worth…
If your supervisor is such a beast of a person…
If your job is that bad…
If you hate it here SO much – please leave!

With an unbelievably low acceptance rate – there are many many students who would LOVE to be happy here! With a competitive job market – there are many qualified candidates who would love to work here. There are many people who wanted/selected BU as their top choice and didn’t have the opportunity.

Please leave – and make room for students and staff who have a positive attitude. Quit. Go home. Find someplace where you are happy. STOP WHINING! You are an adult – act like one!

Life is tough – sometimes it is downright brutal. Part of your education involves learning about the real world and is to roll with the punches. Channel your negative energy into something positive.

    1. Please read the entire article before commenting. Your concern is addressed. I am with Joe…and reading some of these comments makes me sad that some are not taking full advantage of a BU education…”payed” and so many commenting without bothering to read. Sigh.

      1. Does this clarify it for you? Sheesh! Directly from the above article:

In her message to the community, Morrison wrote, “While faculty may require attendance on these Saturdays, we ask that faculty communicate with their students and with any relevant graduate teaching fellows well in advance about their expectations for attendance on these days. Further, we ask that faculty work closely with students who have conflicts, such as work commitments or religious observances, that would prevent their attendance, to ensure that they are not disadvantaged by an excused absence.”

  7. I appreciate BU trying to schedule make-up classes. I am a grad student, work full-time, and juggle a social life. It certainly isn’t ideal that the make-up classes are scheduled on Saturdays because I understand it can conflict with schedules. However, I’d rather go to school on a Saturday than have to take an added course next semester or have to delay my graduation any further. That causes more stress for me than trying to catch up during this semester. Not positive who reads these but it would be helpful if professors forwarded any type of reading material, such as PowerPoint slides, for students to begin learning or taking in information for the classes that haven’t met yet. It may help us to catch up when the classes finally do meet.
