Leaders in Marketing, Development Named VPs
Hook, Engelbourg lauded as integral to their departments’ success
In recognition of their leadership and passion for Boston University and its advancement, the University Board of Trustees has promoted Amy Hook and Karen Anne Engelbourg to vice president. On March 1 Hook will assume the post of vice president of marketing and creative services and Engelbourg will become vice president for development.
Currently associate vice president for strategic communications, Hook (COM’94, GSM’01) has been a BU employee since 1997, most recently overseeing Marketing & Communications Creative Services, the in-house agency that is responsible for the award-winning magazines, websites, and advertising for the University and its 17 schools and colleges. Under Hook’s leadership, the BU brand has expanded and flourished, with a revamped homepage, an updated logo, and a major online presence that includes BU Today and Bostonia.
The promotion “reflects Amy’s leadership and our belief that she is going to play an important role in the BU community for many years to come,” says Stephen P. Burgay, senior vice president for external affairs. “Amy has been part of the team that built Marketing & Communications from scratch starting 10 years ago, and her work during that time was an indispensable part of our growth and success. She’s also been a friend and a colleague whose presence and advice made me, and others I think, better at our jobs, and I’m very grateful for that.” Burgay cites Hook’s “ability to grow and manage the creative service process and to work with clients and really cultivate superb talent within the staff,” and says that she has become “indispensable to the University’s extensive efforts to elevate its profile and reputation. This promotion allows her to bring her voice to the broader leadership table.”
Engelbourg, at present the senior associate vice president for development, manages all individual giving for the University’s $1 billion comprehensive campaign, including principal and international gifts, planned giving, regional leadership gifts, and fundraising for all schools and colleges. Engelbourg joined Boston University as a School of Medicine assistant dean in 2010, and in 2013 became Development & Alumni Relations associate vice president for school development, with oversight for the School of Law, the School of Management, and MED. She previously was an assistant vice president at Brandeis University, director of principal gifts and donor relations at Boston Children’s Hospital, and director of major gifts at Harvard Medical School.
“Karen’s been a major player in the success of our campaign, starting as assistant dean of the School of Medicine, and was promoted several times,” says Scott Nichols, senior vice president for development and alumni relations. Engelbourg was instrumental in securing several multimillion dollar gifts to MED. “She has successfully taken on responsibilities, including coming up to the central office and supervising development for LAW and MED,” Nichols says. “In recognition of that we made her associate vice president. Last summer we consolidated all individual fundraising under her and made her senior associate vice president, so she’s had this very steady progression, and President Robert A. Brown and the board are acknowledging how crucial she is. She’s an extremely talented, hardworking, smart development person, highly respected in the field and by her colleagues.”
