  1. Hmmm …. Looks like the Feminas have Shaken at least one man.

You are 400 years too late, Mr Stone. That was a better time to protest gender exclusion in the theater — when men performed all roles onstage.

As the article clearly states, all-female productions allow women to act in roles, & even more the kinds of roles, from which they have routinely been excluded. They also can avoid much of the endless scrutiny from men that women routinely endure. It’d be different if this was a BU class that should be open to all. But Femina Shakes is essentially a student organization, & they have fairly wide latitude to define themselves & their own goals. If they receive Title IX or other federal funding, that’s another matter. But absent that circumstance, let’s all congratulate FS on their efforts.

  2. This is in response to John Stone’s comment about being “inclusive of other people”. I haven’t had the opportunity to see any of the Female Shakes, but I think it is great that such a troupe exists. I did see “Delirium” last week, which is a re-interpretation of the Brothers Karamazov, and that play was dominated with many male characters. Most plays I have seen at the CFA tend to have more men than women, so to have one play each year at the CFA that is all women sort of compensates for the other times.
