    1. With all respect, the article you link to is not based on scientific evidence. It looks very much as pieces picked up from different sources to build up a non-scientific story of climate change skepticism.

  1. Thank you for an excellent article showing how small changes in interpretation (and selection) of scientific data can lead to significantly different impressions as perceived by the public.
The importance of understanding the ‘forensics’ of how scientific data make their way through the sausage factory to communication to the public (both by the media and legislators) is wonderfully highlighted and clearly illustrated in this piece.

  2. Good analysis, Barb. Fulweiler’s comment is exactly on point: “I’m interested in why there seems to a ‘gotcha’ mentality in the press, instead of a ‘wait, let me understand what’s going on here.’”

I think some journalists who have weak grasp of science seize on illusory contradictions and make them the story instead of trying to get to the bottom of the evidence.

  3. Excellent journalism on a much needed topic! Thank you, Ms. Moran!

Of additional interest to those interested in the communication of science journalism regarding climate change is the book and movie “Merchants of Doubt” by Naomi Oreskes and Eric Conway. This work documents the well-financed media campaign to discredit the overwhelming scientific evidence regarding climate change. Just as we were told for 50 years that, despite all evidence to the contrary, smoking does not cause cancer, so we are now told that climate change is not based on burning fossil fuels. Who funds this campaign? The fossil fuel industry.
