Winter Storm Closes Charles River Campus Wednesday

FitRec to open at 5 p.m.

The prediction that a winter storm is expected to dump 8 to 12  inches of snow on Boston has persuaded University officials to close the Charles River Campus on Wednesday. All Wednesday classes on that campus are canceled. The snow, which will be heaviest between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m., is expected to taper off in the evening.

Peter Fiedler (COM’77), the University’s vice president for administrative services, says employees in essential services must report as scheduled. Essential services include, but are not limited to, BU Police, Facilities Management & Planning, Dining Services, Mail Services, Student Health Services, Environmental Health & Safety, and the University switchboard.

The Boston University Medical Campus (School of Medicine, Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and School of Public Health) will remain open. Staff should check with their managers regarding work schedules. Medical students who are assigned to inpatient services are expected to be present, if possible. Students who are assigned to outpatient services should check with their course director or the policy at the clinical site. Graduate Medical Sciences (GMS) will follow normal school hours and classes will be held as scheduled unless students are notified otherwise by the course instructor. The Goldman School of Dental Medicine will follow normal school hours. All treatment centers will be open for patient care and all classes will be held as scheduled.

Update: SPH has canceled morning and afternoon classes. Individual instructors may choose to hold class online. A decision regarding evening classes will be posted later today. For updated information, visit the BUMC emergency communications website.

Robert Hudson, director of Mugar Memorial Library, says BU libraries will be closed on Wednesday. The BUS (BU Shuttle) is expected to run on schedule, although weather may cause some delays. Any changes to the BUS schedule will be posted on the BU Shuttle website. Shuttle updates are also available on Twitter at @BUShuttle.

Update: FitRec will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Only informal recreation will be available in the fitness center and on the courts during this time. The pools will be open 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for lap swimming and recreation. All programs, classes, practices, and events will remain canceled for the rest of the day.

All residence dining operations (including Hillel) will open as scheduled, as will the George Sherman Union. The following retail locations will be closed: Breadwinners, Einstein’s, the Law Café, the BU Pub, and Healthy Blends. The Union Court in the GSU will be open at 10 a.m. and the remaining retail locations will open as scheduled. All student organization meetings slated to take place at the GSU will take place as scheduled. All ResLife offices will be open as scheduled.

The women’s basketball game against the Naval Academy will be played as scheduled at 7 p.m. at Case Gym.

Noooooo!!!! Now I’ll have to make up labs and have more hw piled on top of what I already have. CFA majors rejoice :(

    • CFA Major on 02.05.2014 at 11:50 am

CFA majors now have full classes to make up that will be added to their already busy scheduled ones on other days. Silence thyself.

  • David G on 02.04.2014 at 11:09 pm

    Thank you!

  • SPH student 2 on 02.05.2014 at 12:00 am

Oh that’s right, because clearly the med campus will get less snow and will provide a completely safe commute for everyone. How does this make sense? BUSPH should not operate as though it is the hospital. Somehow I feel like providing actual health care and public health classes are not on the same level of urgency or necessity to risk one’s safety…

  • Another Engineer on 02.05.2014 at 12:24 am

NO!!!!!.. I really want to do my tension lab. Now I have to change section : (

  • Sph student on 02.05.2014 at 5:15 am

I agree – it’s ridiculous the school of public health remains open always. Probably 1 percent of the student body lives in walking distance to the school so it makes life miserable for everyone else to get there .

And what happens anyways is students don’t come to class so people get behind and the schedule gets behind anyway … So unbelievable

  • SDM fac on 02.05.2014 at 5:19 am

What about the BU shuttle? Is it running? How will students who live on or near the CRC and rely on the shuttle, get to the Med campus?

    • Art Jahnke on 02.05.2014 at 6:23 am

Yes, tbe BU Shuttle is running. Any changes to the BUS schedule will be posted on the BU Shuttle website. Shuttle updates are also available on Twitter at @BUShuttle.

If the storm is coming it will affect both Charrls River Campus and The Medical Campus too! it is not a two seperate worlds!
Dental students safety should come first, and it suppose to be optional wether to attend or not is such a weather.

  • Roguerouge on 02.05.2014 at 6:31 am

Is there a day set aside for makeup classes for this snow day, such as at the end of the semester?

    • Art Jahnke on 02.05.2014 at 6:45 am

      No, there is not.

  • Dominick Leone on 02.05.2014 at 7:32 am

    Good Morning,

Most professors will be accommodating regarding ability to attend lecture, lab, or exams. Just email them as soon as you can if you cannot attend class. All of us want to see that you are safe — if that’s not possible of you are not comfortable, then please let your professor know via email!

  • I think I'm a dr? on 02.05.2014 at 7:39 am

If you’re at the Medical Campus… you’re considered “essential”. Hurray (unenthusiasticly)… I love when the 1 Bus from Harvard Square starts sliding forward as it’s attempting to come to a stop and you nearly hit a truck in front of you while the driver is shouting her hail mary’s… That’s when you know you’re “essential” *rolls eyes*

  • jay on 02.05.2014 at 7:50 am

Is there any word on the BUEMS classes today or is that what they will decide later today, is the REC and training facility part of the charles river campus

    • orourkej on 02.05.2014 at 8:02 am

BU EMS classes for today and this evening have been canceled. You should contact your instructor about when a makeup class will be scheduled.

  • tb on 02.05.2014 at 8:24 am

Howard Gotlieb Archival Center will be closed the hole day???

    • orourkej on 02.05.2014 at 8:35 am

Yes, it is closed all day.

  • Leo on 02.05.2014 at 8:29 am

This is unsafe and ridiculous, I want to remind BU officials that BU medical campus is in Boston, not in Florida!!! I can’t wait to see what would be there reaction would be if something bad happens to the students while trying to get to the dental clinic for a cleaning and the patient as expected do not shows up for the appointment. 95% of dental patients do not show up to the clinic. Is it worth it to put peoples lives at risk for something that could wait 1 day?

  • BUMC Employee on 02.05.2014 at 9:56 am

Once again CRC is closed and BUMC is open – how is this a good decision? I will give BU credit this time for getting the BUMC announcement included in the one that went to all of BU. There needs to be something in place where BUMC can close but those involved in patient care can come in. For the many of us who are researchers and support staff and are not patient facing, this seems silly and unsafe and it once again highlights the inequalities between CRC & BUMC.

  • SMG on 02.05.2014 at 10:35 am

Is the graduate section (the graduate program office and the feld career center) of SMG open today?

    • Rich Barlow on 02.05.2014 at 10:41 am

No, it is closed along with the Charles River Campus.

  • 3 year patient on 02.05.2014 at 10:40 am

I’m a patient.always show up.have taken days off work, shown up and been sent home for some silly reason.Took today off,I’ll be there this afternoon as I feel obligated. You as a Dr. should feel some obligation to your patients, who after all are paying for you to practice on.Stop by and say hello this afternoon Leo,I’ll give you a few pointers on acting like a grown up,not an elementary school student looking for a snow day.

    • Jen on 02.05.2014 at 5:32 pm

      What a disrespectful post.
