There is 1 comment on POV: To Stop Bad Guys, Ratify the UN Arms Trade Treaty

  1. This is a myopic POV. The best offense is always a strong defense and this begins with access to “small arms” which is what this treaty is really about regulating.

The United States has been the bastion of liberty the world over while the UN is comprised of nations that have never been able to hold a candle to us socially, militarily or economically. The founders of this nation could never have created this same bastion of liberty had such a treaty existed back in the day. Please do not espouse the virtues of democracy (two wolves and sheep deciding what to have for dinner) or disarmament. Even Barack Obama recognized in his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace prize is not an option but rather that it is our possession of nuclear arms that serves to deter other nations from taking action. The same is true for all arms. We cannot pick and choose the winners by disarming those we do not deem suitable to possess arms. We must instead let nature take its course as it has done for thousands of years.

That said, there is no harm in the USA leading by example and readopting a noninterventionist foreign policy. As Teddy Roosevelt once said we should “walk softly and carry a big stick”.
