Memorial Mass for Slain Freshman
Marsh Chapel service for Diego Fernandez Montes (CAS’17) tomorrow
The parents of the late Diego Fernandez Montes (CAS’17) will be on campus tomorrow to attend a Catholic Mass honoring their son, who was killed during a robbery last month over spring break in his hometown of Mexico City.
The memorial Mass will be said by the University’s Catholic chaplain, the Rev. David Barnes, at Marsh Chapel at noon and is open to the public.
Montes died March 13 in a robbery while riding in a taxi. The following weekend, BU’s Catholic Center celebrated a Mass of remembrance for him, while more than 50 students attended a prayer vigil at Marsh Chapel.
The freshman had been considering majoring in economics and math and using his education to improve conditions in his native country, whose poverty he had become concerned about during his studies at BU. At the time of his death, Montes was treasurer of his residence hall association and of the Mexican student group Mexas@BU.
“We hope that this memorial Mass creates intentional moments for reflection and remembrance of the vibrant life that Diego led and the hope that he has inspired in us all,” says the Rev. Brittany Longsdorf, BU’s chaplain for international students, who is coordinating the Mass with Barnes.
The memorial Mass for Diego Fernandez Montes is tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, at noon, in Marsh Chapel, 735 Commonwealth Ave. A reception will be held prior to the service, at 11 a.m., in the Thurman Room, in the lower level of the chapel.+ Comments
