There are 9 comments on WTBU Snags College Radio Station of the Year Honors

  1. It appears that WTBU atracts audience members who have a great deal of trouble expressing themselves. “BU RADIO ROCKS” for example. So many people use the word “rocks” about so many things, it’s difficult to know what they really mean. It’s the same thing with “awesome”. A much-maligned cable TV firm uses “awesome” in its TV commercials for “service” that is barely adequate. If these people live near Boston (and as the article states that’s not necessary), it might be good idea to flip to WBUR, Boston University’s REAL radio station. It’s replete with persons who can express themselves very well indeed.

    1. College radio is free form and is run by and for students. WBUR is run for the Boston community and the United States, so I think perhaps it should be held to a higher standard than a student radio station. There is no comparison between a station which has a full-time and highly trained staff that produces nationally syndicated shows and a small, volunteer, student station which broadcasts essentially only to their peers and families.

I’m not exactly sure what qualifies radio as “REAL”; however, if it takes millions of dollars, strict formatting, and an audience the size of the US, then I certainly don’t think WTBU can be or wants to be real.

  2. Whether one uses or doesn’t use “awesome” or “rocks” in promoting one’s station, program(s) or achievement(s), is irrelevant. The fact that WTBU provides a great learning experience for the real world of broadcast journalism is a testament to its longevity and dedicated and creative staff (past and present).

  3. Aw, geez, LAURENCE, lighten up a bit. You said “…Boston University’s REAL radio station. It’s replete with persons who can express themselves very well indeed.”

That’s because they’re grown-ups. Give congrats where they’re due. These students should be very proud of their accomplishment and recognition.
