  1. How refreshing to have a woman chairing a department in the school of engineering. I was speaking to a second-year physics student at Harvard who told me his classes have very few women and minority students. (He was a minority student.) I hope that the presence of a woman will encourage more young women to enter the sciences and that eventually the number of women in leadership positions will equal that of men. Now, what to do to focus on the inclusion of minorities? Let’s hope that BU will find the leadership to develop that at all of its schools.

  2. Speaking from my Murray Hill, NJ office at Bell Labs – I was saddened to see Alice leave … the consequences of her departure are already painfully evident. Speaking as a BU alum – I’m glad that the university has recruited such an outstanding individual. Speaking as a friend of Alice, I’m thrilled that she has moved into a position where I know she will thrive and make outstanding contributions to the community. Congratulations Boston University – you’ve acquired an amazing individual.
