Create the Perfect Hot Dog Recipe, Win Big
Kayem promises $1,000 and Fenway Park glory
With only two months to go until National Hot Dog Day, July 23—mark it on your calendars if it’s not already—Fenway Frank maker Kayem invites creative cooks to reinvent the traditional hot dog. Five finalists, judged on creativity and marketability, will be pitted against one another in a Fenway playoff called “Create the Next Fenway Frank.” The champion dog maker will win $1,000 and the runner-up will get $500.
What are you up against? Three entries shared by Kayem are “Liam’s Boston Baked Bean Bomber,” a Fenway Frank stuffed with cheddar cheese and wrapped in bacon, deep fried, and served on a toasted, buttered bun with baked beans and chopped onion on top; “Ginger’s Green Monster Dog,” a hot dog topped with shredded green cabbage, chopped green onions, diced jalapeño peppers, and a Cheez Whiz and mayonnaise topping; and “The Boston Strong Dog,” served with sweet peppers, chopped onions, and horseradish mustard on top of the hot dog.
Creations must start with a plain Fenway Frank and a New England–style bun (meaning top-loading). From that point on, anything goes. The first round of the contest closes June 15.
The Chelsea-based company will select five finalists, and then turn the decision over to Facebook voting, which will determine the final two. They will be brought to Boston for a free lunchtime National Hot Dog celebration at the Landing on Long Wharf on July 23. There, a yet-to-be announced Red Sox player will present the grand prizewinner, and the winner’s recipe will be unveiled and sold later that evening at the Red Sox–Tampa Bay Rays game.
A few words of warning: competition may be fierce. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council reports that Americans spend over $1.7 billion on hot dogs every year, and more than seven billion hot dogs are eaten in the summer months.
