CAS after Dark

Students transform building when classes end

Home to an average of 416 classes a day, the College of Arts & Sciences—better known as CAS—is easily the busiest classroom building on campus. Nearly 9,000 students a day walk through its arched doorways, taking courses in subjects from earth sciences and chemistry to modern languages and art history. There’s even an observatory on the roof.

Once classes are done for the day and dusk falls, however, something magical happens inside the sprawling Gothic building. Classrooms, hallways—even stairwells—are transformed into a vibrant rehearsal space for dance troupes, comedy acts, theater groups—even a barbershop quartet.

I love this video because it captures the lively and surprising atmosphere of the CAS halls. I teach in CAS from 6 to 9 on Thursday evenings. Whether during a class or walking through the halls after class, one encounters wide variety of cultural expression.

If CAS at night is a slice of cake, I personally think Doug and the CTS evening staff are the icing. Also, Youngblood is probably one of the most amazing last names I’ve seen in a while (assuming that isn’t a stage name). As for the video itself, seeing all of the unique artistic performances in their pre-production form was really interesting. Good job Joe and Erik! Quite an enchanting piece.

The best video I’ve seen on butoday so far. I cant express how much I’m going to miss these halls after next week. Being a senior is tough.

WELCOME BU STUDENT ARTSY FOLK! We are delighted that you find good spaces in this building. I love wandering down the hall and seeing you practice. Bienvenido a casa!

Really heartening to see both the arts and the openness of BU celebrated in one succinct, elegant video. BU doesn’t have the snazziest concert halls or the best auditoriums, but if it continues to nurture the spirit of spontaneity and resourcefulness on display here, the campus culture will flourish. Thanks for the clip.

A wonderful video to end the year, does anyone know the name of the quartet from the beginning of the video?
