The BU Culture Shock blog was recently named by BostonInno as one of Boston’s college-related blogs you need to be following right now—not bad for an endeavor that began just over two years ago. The broad palette—from student life to love to politics—of Culture Shock, the official blog of the Howard Thurman Center, BU’s multicultural center, attracts about 16,000 readers a month from 189 countries, and those numbers continue to climb.

“One of Howard Thurman’s thoughts is that you can get to know yourself through an inward journey,” says Carly Fleming (CAS’12), one of three dozen writers who contribute to the blog, “and you further that knowledge of yourself through shared experiences. That’s one of the things we do with the blog.”

Seniors Michael Bruffee (CAS’12), Lea Petrovic (CAS’12), Bonnie Tuballa (CAS’12), Adam Engel (CAS’12), Fleming, and Allyson Galle (CAS’12) say that they are proud to have created a conversation that seems to please so many readers.

“It’s incredible knowing our reach,” says Galle. “The new people who are coming in now have never known it otherwise, but we got to be there before it hit that point where it was a project for the world instead of just the Thurman Center.”

“We formed this really tight community in this blog,” says Engel. “It’s become more than a blog. It’s become this really awesome group that we have.”

  1. I have had the opportunity to see this blog grow from a small sprout into the beautiful flower it is today. I cannot express enough how proud I am of the graduating Senior CultureShockers. They have shown incredible leadership; their hard work has positioned BU CultureShock to keep growing and reach larger audience. We have shared incredible memories, like when we got our first reader from South Dakota (the last state to read our blog), when we got our first hit from a Chinese reader (i guess we broke through the China firewall), and when we hit 10k hit in a week (We can kinda thank BU Today for that). Thank you so much. I will truly miss all of you. It brings a tear to my eye that I am here in Copenhagen and cannot properly say farewell to you all. But everyone of you has a special place in my heart.
