There are 89 comments on Monday Classes Canceled

  1. What happened to: “We are looking at a very windy and rainy day”… I thought the university was definitely going to stay open because this hurricane is nothing special

  2. I’m a little confused – are classes/labs closed on the Medical Campus? The BU Emergency Alert only specifies the Charles River Campus but this article reports both…

  3. Thank God school is cancelled I would not want my poor son Adam to go through all of the tortures of going to class in a hurricane. Our dog Oreo was so worried for Adam he was not able to sleep for 3 days Thank God our baby will be safe. Hopefully BU will be smart and cancel class on Tuesday as well.

    1. Cind,
I totally agree with you honey. The boys need to stay safe and dry and have too many tests! Joshy is so stressed with all his work and is so scared because he needed to wash his sheets tonight but they can’t use the washing machine! What’s a boy to do! I just want him to have a good day off tomorrow to get back in the swing of the things and go to bed in some clean sheets. Mwah speak to you soon hun…love that the boys are getting so close. XO

  4. Good job on the cancellation but as usual, BUMC is as clear as mud on where it stands. Does anyone know what the situation is? Why does this happen every fall and winter when the weather hits?

  5. Thank you for using good judgement for the safety of all at BU students, faculty and staff as a parent far away from my son this is a relief to me. This has been a stressful year at BU with the robberies and now this storm… Safety should always be first and foremost.

  6. Would have been nice for university to inform parents about the weather forecast specific to Boston area and their emergency plans and provisions. We are cross country/long distance and my kid told me classes were cancelled but feeling clueless about the emergency planning and how to contact univ in event of significant power outages/can’t reach student. Should/Can kids still access computer labs/libraries/editing facilities etc? I took it upon myself to check BU Today.. but think it would have been better for BU to communicate with families who are on their list serves (for BU Today, Bostonia, etc)

      1. Breaking news: Now that the MBTA is shutting down at 2, Mugar will be closing at noon. Unfortunately, a lot of the staff (including myself) depend on the MBTA to get to and from work, so we have to leave. We tried! Stay safe, BU!

    1. This is a storm, not a Category 4 Hurricane. Tell your ADULT child to charge their cell phone so you can reach them and get a friend’s phone number, too and be responsible enough to get the information he or she needs him or herself. They should have common sense enough to manage if you have embedded them with that knowledge which you should have by now. If you are this neurotic about this maybe your child should have stayed at home and gone to a community college instead of an urban campus in the heart of Boston. Just wait until there is a “nor’easter” blizzard!!

      1. @former BU parent. You have one fact correct. This is not a Category 4 Hurricane. However, it is still a serious storm. Serious enough for officials in several states to have numerous press conferences to educate people on all age levels on how to stay safe. I don’t believe any of these parents are being neurotic. I firmly believe the parents are showing concern. In reference to your snide remarks about going to a community college, I believe the parents have educated their students and these students have earned the right to attend Boston University. Why are you even on this site?

  7. just recieved this

BU Medical Campus CLOSED Monday, Oct. 29, 2012

Boston University Medical Campus will be closed on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy. This includes the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Medicine and Division of Graduate Medical Sciences.

Students who are assigned to inpatient services are expected to be present, if possible. Students who are assigned to outpatient services should check with their course director or the policy at the clinical site.

For updated information, please call the emergency communications hotline at 617-638-6886 or visit the BUMC emergency communications website

  8. Does anybody know if Tuesday is a normal Tuesday schedule or if Monday schedule is pushed to Tuesday? i can’t find where it says anything about this….

    thanks

    1. Tuesday is going to be a normal schedule. They plan all the Monday schedule days out way in advance and wouldn’t change it in such short notice without sending out a bunch of emails.

  9. Tulane did a great job communIcating during the recent hurricane. They had an FAQ page and regular updates on a blog. They gave specific information regarding the power outage, the buildings with generators, when and where you could charge computers and phones, and dining hall hours and menus. They told everyone what they knew and they updated the site as new information became available.

    1. Are you honestly comparing BU to a school that’s located in a serious hurricane zone? This is ridiculous. The article has provided plenty of “FAQ” information and individual pages, such as Fitrec, have agreed to post updates accordingly. The university has an emergency alert system that is available if needed. BU students have lost power for a few hours before due to CONSTRUCTION and a fire in Downtown Boston…it’s not the end of the world. These students are adults and maybe it’s time for you to treat your child as one. You’re CLEARLY not from New England if you think this situation is comparable to a hurricane approaching New Orleans…threats of 60 mph maximum winds vs Oh, I don’t know, 120 mph? Sure, that’s about the same.

PS. BU offers most of this information on a regular basis….for example, I invite you to visit the Dining Services page (/dining) to find half of the information you suggested above.

      1. BU Today has ALWAYS been the source for crisis communication, so I’m not really sure what you’re talking about. As “former BU parent” commented below, I think that BU has gone beyond normal expectations in this situation – the university has come under a lot of criticism from parents lately that are constantly undermining its efforts, and bringing up examples of schools that are in a completely different geographical environment just seems completely irrelevant.

For the record, I’m a relatively recent graduate and was always extremely pleased with the way information was communicated to me in emergency situations.

    2. Seriously, BU will take the precautions to care for your ADULT child. I agree, Boston is not New Orleans so of course they don’t need to go to that extreme. Relax and instead of finding fault with everything try commending the school for taking EXTRA precautions.

  10. FitRec will be closed at least until 3:30 pm. on monday 10/29/12. A decision will be made about a late afternoon opening tomorrow at some point. Follow @Fitrec on twitter for current hours and updates.

  11. If the situation remains unclear, and student safety is still a possible issue on Tuesday, please don’t be greedy President Brown…we barely got Monday off, thank you Governor Patrick for having some common sense!

  12. Well blast me tack an’ grog but we be runnin’ th’ skeleton t’day tho thar ain’t naught but a blight o’ blusterin tween me fo’castle an’ nest. Whar’s me pirates at, ter be giv’n achase per such temid tropic’s twister?

YARRR an damn all spell checkn’s

  13. My son and I are native Californians where there is no real weather. I know my son will be safe and take the lead of his dorm mates who grew up in more severe climates. I hope he has an interesting adventure. Of course I also hope the millions affected suffer no further casualties and minimal damage.

PS- So, do we get a prorated rebate for the lost credit hours??

  14. It’s a good thing that we needed the governor to cancel classes. Congratulations on ensuring the safety of your students BU. I’m glad you have our best interests in mind. Thank you Governer Patrick for keeping us safe.

  15. THe news says that Hurricane Sandy is meant to flood at approximately 12-1pm on Tuesday. I am from California and my daughter goes to BU. We are not used to this kind of thing. I believe that school needs to be canceled on Tuesday to ensure the safety of my daughter and all the other students. The rain on monday will be worsened on Tuesday. watch the news people

  16. BU always does this. I think it’s awesome that classes were cancelled for monday, but they always do this and it’s never truly worth it. Don’t get me wrong, i’m not upset they cancelled class, I’m just frustrated because they are going to realize it maybe wasnt so neccessary and then resume classes on Tuesday. TUESDAY IS GOING TO BE WORSE. WATCH THE NEWS. FLOODS. BU did this for Irene. They cancelled class on Monday (pointless) and then when shit hit the fan on Tuesday, we had class. DOn’t repeat your mistakes. Cover your asses and watch the news. Tuesday will be worse.

  17. So, what’s the situation about tomorrow? Are classes / activities going to be cancelled for tomorrow?

My daughter who goes to NYU was informed just now that the university will remain closed for tomorrow as well.

Please update us the soonest possible. Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Mangoli De la Portas
    PaoThyra13Ole

  18. please cancel class on tuesday, i have agoraphobia so going outside is already bad as it is. but when its flooded, its even scarier. i might drown outside walking to class. don’t make me suffer even further for my mental disorder because of a natural occurrence.

  19. As as parent who is living on the west coast and far away from her son,
I thank you BU for taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe.

  20. Instead of informing your students if school is canceled tomorrow, I think you should tell them at 6 p.m. tonight like you did yesterday. And inform them about the condition of the storm. It’s suppose to flood tomorrow.

  21. I am a semi-professional weather-woman and I feel it is vital for classes to be cancelled on Tuesday. I recently ran some algorithms and it is GOING to be DANGEROUS outside tomorrow. I expect you to do the right thing BU.

    Best,
    JPM

  22. Just wondering why the University is waiting until 8pm to inform us about possible cancellation? I think that is extremely late considering conditions are supposed to be worse than they are now!

  23. i really hope they cancel tomorrow classes because i dont live NEAR the campus. i have to take the Red line and the Green line everyday for school. and the first class for me is 8AM tomorrow morning.

  24. I really think classes should be cancelled tomorrow. Not complaining that classes were cancelled today, but it was indeed possible to make it to classes this morning and through the early afternoon. The storm is picking up speed now and it’s supposed to be worse tomorrow. If anything, classes should have been held today and be cancelled tomorrow. Hope BU makes the appropriate decision.

  25. I am a parent and I live in Nebraska and I am seriously concerned for my muffin. My mother is hear in her wheel chair seriously loosing her marbles worrying over my sweetums. When will we know if there are classes tomorrow? I might have a stomach ulcer over this :(. I have been watching the news with my mother and she might soon have nervous diarrhea and no one wants that. Please cancel classes tomorrow.
    Love,
    Carol

  26. i will not risk neither my life nor my property to make it to classes tomorrow whether the school is going to close or not. whoever is in charge of making a class cancellation should take this very serious. i think school should definitely be closed tomorrow.

  27. I live in a basement, it’s raining heavily and I’ve already been warned about my apartment flooding. Don’t make me go outside and risk the flooding with nobody here to do anything about it.
