A Concert Promising Summer Romance
A cappella quartet Anthology performs tonight
Good news for those who enjoy BU’s many a cappella groups during the academic year and are suffering withdrawal: tonight, the talented women’s vocal ensemble Anthology will perform Summer Romance, a concert featuring classical favorites and beloved songs from the Great American Songbook. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Boston and is free and open to the public.
Anthology, a professional women’s quartet, performs a wide repertoire, including classical choral pieces, Broadway show tunes, hot jazz, Renaissance polyphony, world folk, and music by local Boston composers. Its members are sopranos Anney Gillotte and Vicky Reichert and mezzo-sopranos Michelle Vachon and Allegra Martin. Martin and Gillotte attended graduate school together at Westminster Choir College in New Jersey and formed the a cappella group when they moved to Boston about four and a half years ago. The quartet performs regularly in Boston.
Tonight, Anthology will sing vocal arrangements of classical instrumental pieces as well as jazz and pop pieces. Come to hear their renditions of Pachelbel’s Canon in D major, by German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel, and the often-covered “Route 66,” by American songwriter Bobby Troup.
This is the sixth season the Church of Saint John the Evangelist has hosted the Wednesday night concert series. Performances last an hour or less and feature predominantly classical music. Solo performers and ensembles from the Boston area present religious and secular works. While admission is free, contributions to help support the artists are encouraged. Patrons can chat with the performers following each performance at a reception, where food and drinks are served.
Other concerts in the series: a performance of songs by Latin American composers and by Leonard Bernstein on August 8, featuring soprano Cecile Hasite, with John Ferguson on the piano; a concert of music by Adrienne Albert, Michael Cohen, and others on August 15, with Anne Katherine Smith (mezzo-soprano), Lizary Rodriguez (harp), Michael Tabak (flute), and Stephanie Wingfield (cello); a concert titled Iberia! featuring Spanish oratorio, Sephardic liturgical, and Hoshana Rabbah cantata on August 22; and a performance by the El Fuego Early Music Ensemble titled Cupid’s Arrow: 17th- and 18th-Century Songs from Spain and the New World on August 29.
Make St. John’s your spot for a Wednesday night aural treat.
