Oh, the Places You’ll Go
BU Study Abroad Expo tomorrow at GSU
Whether studying public health in Geneva, sailing in Sydney, or working at Parliament in London, BU students are discovering a world beyond Comm Ave thanks to more than 90 study-abroad programs offered by the University. If you have an itch to travel or have been dreaming of an overseas internship, plan to stop by the Study Abroad Expo tomorrow, Thursday, September 22, at the George Sherman Union.
The University’s campus extends to over 30 international cities across six continents. Courses of study range from archaeology to engineering to travel writing. At the expo, students will have an opportunity to speak with past participants and receive information on deadlines, internships, and financial aid. For example, qualified BU students enrolled in the Shanghai summer program now receive a $1,200 travel grant courtesy of the US-China Education Trust program.
“It’s a one-stop shop,” says Meg Lucas (COM’10), marketing and communications coordinator for Study Abroad. “There will be academic advisors, program managers, representatives from other countries—it’s the place to be for anyone interested in studying abroad.”
With the Expo’s access to such a wide range of resources, Lucas expects it to attract a record number of students—from upperclassmen already intent on studying abroad to freshmen with questions about how the program works.
An alumna of the Dublin Internship Program, Lucas sees few reasons not to take advantage of the opportunities offered by Study Abroad.
“It’s really the most relevant and active way for students to find their passion,” she says. “Whether they go to find themselves, to lose themselves, or to gain preprofessional experience, students come back saying that it was one of the best times they’ve ever had.”
The deadline to apply for the spring study-abroad program is October 15, and the deadline for summer study abroad is March 1. The application can be started on the Study Abroad website.
The Study Abroad Expo is Thursday, September 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the George Sherman Union small ballroom, second floor, 775 Commonwealth Ave.
