  1. I guess you have not heard of one fellow who moved all to the very reliable Google only to be told one day that he’d violated some policy (he knew not which, where or when)and was eliminated from Google without warning. Attempts to communicate with Google all ended with them simply telling him that he’d violated policy. PERIOD. So beware. Be cautious. And BACK UP CRITICAL INFORMATION somewhere else.

      1. Thanks for the link. After looking into it further…

An automated system detected an image in his account that was flagged as child pornography. He was compiling images that he felt were exemplary of works of pornography becoming absurd and violent in modern times. The systems in place to detect violations worked and blocked his account. The situation was resolved and he got everything back.

I don’t have delusions of security with cloud services, but this is not exactly the best example. He uploaded something controversial and the systems in place flagged it. It’s upsetting that someone actually attempting to work to highlight issues with modern pornography was penalized for his efforts (and somewhat ironic) but there is little fault here and the presence of this incident has undoubtedly adjusted policy for violations.

I’m also fairly certain BU’s (and other school’s) implementations of Google Apps for Students have slightly more communication avenues in the event of policy violations.

All of that said, absolutely, yes, backup critical information and don’t trust the cloud as more than one additional backup to one you already have.
