  1. This is awful and embarrassing–it does not pertain to many of the students at BU. Don’t know why people who actually dress well weren’t used in the video.

  2. Jeggings are a horrible invention. JUST USE SKINNY JEANS!!! This does not portray the fashion of BU, moreover, BU’s fashion is so diverse to generalize it to one style would not be accurate.

  3. I thought that this was a great topic. I may be biased because I want to get into fashion journalism but the segment is called “YouSpeak”. They are college students, so fashion is important! Maybe not as much as the health-care bill, I thought it was something refreshing and interesting for the student body.

  4. I love my über-casual style: jeans, t-shirt, and sneakers. Apparently I would make a very good candidate for “What Not To Wear.” But, I’m a miserly person, and I value comfort over any fashionable aspects; I can hardly think of something more loose-fitting than a baggy t-shirt or an over-sized hoodie.

    To the fashion-challenged, rock on!

  5. I agree with the woman who said “tights are NOT pants.” Please let this trend end soon. Despite what many think–no matter how thin you are–this trend does not look good on you! Please cover your behinds.

  6. I agree that this it terrible…those people are not dressed well at all. They are certainly neither fashionistas nor hipsters; they are simply wearing the boring typical clothing which every else wears. It doesn’t look good, it’s not fashion-forward, and it’s not a current look–just a general typical look.

  7. That was so painful to watch. Enough with boots. If there’s a foot of snow on the ground then by all means wear some boots. Stop dressing like your going to work for the BPD motorcyle division. I also don’t understand how people even get their feet through the ends of those tight jeans or how men can even bare to sit down in those things. Students are spending way to much of mommy and daddy’s money on ridiculous clothes. BU also spent way to much of BU’s money on making such a worthless article and video. Oh, and the boots and sweatpants thing, also ridiculous. Oh, and sunglasses are unneccessary when the sun is not out. People want to go out but god forbid they make eye contact with anyone while they are doing it. Funny stuff.

  8. No, that’s not a fashionable look; it’s generic and smacks of bad taste. Nobody looks good in the monstrosities that are uggs. Jeggings are stupid; what’s wrong with skinny jeans? These are not fashionistas or trendsetters; there are plenty at BU but they are not the girls who wears uggs and northface jackets. Sorry, there’s nothing remotely fashionable and forward-looking about these items.

What next, promoting the Jimmy Choo Uggs as worth the money? :-/

  9. Why is everyone getting so angry about this video? It actually portrays a very popular style on campus, probably the most popular I see as a student when walking to class. I do disagree with the title, because you wouldn’t find any of this in a fashion magazine, but it is definitely a good reflection of typical college fashion. I do not understand why people feel the need to get angry about Uggs, it is your personal choice not to wear them. It is such a trivial thing to get angry about if other people chose to wear them because they are COMFORTABLE. Also, to all the people who “don’t understand the point of jeggings” or say “just wear skinny jeans”: Yes, that works if you are stick thin and skinny jeans are comfortable for you. Jeggings are SO much more comfortable, especially if you are not stick thin and jeans make you feel uncomfortable.

  10. I have never left a comment on a BU Today article before, but this is just awful. I am disgusted that BU Today managed to find THE most stream-lined and unfashionable people for this piece. Yes, BU is an attractive school, but most of the “fashion” talked about here is just what the next person is wearing. Fashion lies in the jems of campus that actually take time to compose and create an outfit, not the people who throw on the typical look (i.e., everything highlighted in this article). UGG boots? Big scarves? Leather bag? Leather boots? REALLY?! The only good thing about this piece is seeing first-hand how ignorant of fashion most of the girls at BU are, since I personally don’t interact with those of this style and attitude.
Be yourself. BUnique. Stop follow the masses, BU.

  11. I go to BU and I don’t wear any of the ‘trends’ discussed in the video. Pretty sure wearing Uggs and leggings does not make you a fashionista — just someone who conforms to the norm and isn’t willing to take fashion risks or think for themself….

  12. Not a lot of unique style at BU. Peacoats, leggings, super high rainboots, sweats, flannel, skinny jeans, beanies, polos, STUNNAS, uggs, hightops, neon, scarves, totes.

Just about sums up 99% of us.

  13. I think some of this debate might be because the title of the video and the question the students were asked don’t match. The students in the video were asked if there is a BU look, which they describe. They weren’t asked if this is fashion forward.

  14. Yeah, they talk about what’s commonly accepted/bought by every single girl, but this video says no more than going outside and taking a look would. If anyone can point out a hipster in that video, please tell me the minute:second point. Same goes for a fashionista; every person interviewed looks like 5,000 others at BU.

  15. The story would be OK if the people that spoke were actually fashionistas themselves. It is hard to take what they say seriously when you look at how they are dressed in the video.

  16. The prep look is classic and hasn’t changed in decades. If you go that way, the worst people might say about you at the 20th reunion is that you were conventional. If you’re on a budget, put your money there. Buy the good stuff and it will last.

If you’re a young man, avoid those plaid shorts that proclaim “I am a tasteless jerk, have poor relationships with women, and prefer the company of drunken men.”

If you’re a young woman, be aware that although UGGs look like boots they’re glorified slippers. They also say more than you’d like about your vulnerability to fashion trends, how you spend your money, and your ability to plan for bad weather.

Make sure you have some money set aside for a decent winter coat. When Snooki appears in that black North Face jacket (you know the one I mean) you’ll all be frantically looking for the next trend.

  17. a few problems:
    1. hipsters? where? I have yet to see anyone who would be defined as “hipster” in even the most liberal application of the word.
    2. a lot of the things cited as being “BU Style” are just generic things that can be found on any college campus (uggs, leggings, Northface, scarves.) BU as a whole does have its own unique style, I think (at least unique among Boston-area colleges.) but this video does not represent that.
    3. the main problem with this video is that it doesn’t interview anyone with a cool/interesting aesthetic. everyone in it is either unfashionable or on-trend. there are lots of BU students who dress well- for example, http://www.collegefashionista.com/school/boston_university/
overall, I’m disappointed, BU Today. :(

  18. Hi I was interviewed and I did talk about uggs but what you didn’t see is that I said i’m not a huge fan of the appearance of them. actually in high school i hated them. I came here though and my feet were cold. I wear them because they are warm. You’re all so quick to judge.

  19. All of my strong opinions about fashion aside, I don’t see the point of this video. It is just like the other YouSpeak videos that interview random people on Marsh Plaza – a bunch of opinions from people who I have no reason to listen to. I can get opinions from my classmates and friends in person, and BU does not need to make a video out of it. Especially when the topic is something that is easier seen in person. What do people at BU wear? Walk down Comm Ave.

  20. As a person who was interviewed in this piece, I must say, I did not intend to be represented as a “fashionista.” I was asked if there was a “BU Look” and I said there was–scarves, wool coats, UGGS and boots, Sperrys, etc. Do I think any of this is fashionable? No. Do I think I am fashionable? Absolutely not. Is this what 75% of people at BU wear? Absolutely. I merely answered the questions.

Perhaps the editing should have been done better, or the title should have been better matched to the information presented. But please, don’t be hating on us poor fashionless people stopped on the street.

  21. To those who asked why everyone here is getting upset about this – “angry” is a bit strong, I would say that people are a bit irritated and frustrated with this piece. True, these students were asked what people on campus tend to wear, and they’re right to say that these are typical trends; uggs, leggings, etc. Our problem is mainly with the interviewer who apparently mistitled the article and has no clue on what’s consider a great look in the fashion community. We do not consider blindly following trends and looking generic to be “fashionable” or an aesthetic to aspire to. BU has many girls who carefully craft together actual “looks” that are both unique and incredibly beautiful. We’re wondering why these girls – and some guys as well – weren’t interviewed for more inspiring tips. Where are the girls who wear textured tights, workman’s boots, vintage floral dresses and well-cut jackets? Where are those who manage to add a bohemian flair to a simple jeans/sweater combnation? BU has fashion bloggers, enthusiasts and many people who really put an effort into their look. It would make us proud to see these people represented rather than those who follow the crowd. Style – and being a “hipster” (though I take issue with the way that word is often (mis)used) – is not about looking typical or following fashion “rules”. It’s about putting together a striking look that works for you, challenges conventional fashion “wisdom”, is original and won’t be seen on anyone else.
Want to check out a real BU fashionista? Try http://adelaidestayed.blogspot.com/ – this girl is much more representative of the stylish women who can be seen wowing everyone on Comm. ave. And no, she doesn’t wear uggs.

  22. You could also take the time to come out to the BU Theater, where there’s a whole room full of people at school for costuming and talk to US about what fashion is doing.

Because y’know, sometimes our GRADES can depend on being able to pinpoint a trend from any given era.
