  1. You may find that you get more respect from folks if you refer to them not as if the issues affecting their lives define who they are, but rather are just that – issues affecting their lives.

    (example: “the homeless alcoholic” who you refer to in the second paragraph).

  3. I agree with the commenter above – we should use people centered language. The man Dave helped is not a “homeless alcoholic.” He is a person who does not have a home and suffers from alcoholism.
