BU Jumpstart volunteers at South End preschool

In the slide show above, BU students in the Jumpstart program work with preschoolers at a spring literacy event.

Jumpstart, an AmeriCorps program that recruits college students to mentor three-to-five-year-old children, will hold a spring literacy event to cap off its third year at Boston University. The event will take place on Friday, April 16, at Escuelita, a preschool in the South End.

Throughout the year, Jumpstart has joined with area preschools to help children develop the literacy and social skills needed to enter kindergarten. Jumpstart is sponsored by the School of Education, but volunteers come from all BU schools and colleges.

The program reflects the efforts of 45 core members who volunteer about 300 hours during the academic year. Splitting into teams of about 10, the volunteers fan out to preschools around the BU area to work with children one-on-one, says site manager Lindsey Dolgos.

For this year’s spring literacy celebration, Jumpstart joined forces with the Filipino Student Association to help children at two preschools in the Boston area. The first was at the South End’s Ellis Memorial Preschool on March 26.

Tomorrow’s event will have a Dr. Seuss theme. Children, parents, and volunteers will participate in several “thinking stations,” covering literacy, math, writing, logic, and science. Each station invites children to interact with characters from famous Dr. Seuss books such as The Cat in the Hat and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
