Graphene and the undergrad: a love story
“Mind blowing.” “Amazing.” “Weird.” Descriptions like these are usually reserved for the latest indie band to rock BU Central. But for Claire Thomas (CAS’10), they’re the perfect way to convey her love for physics and a certain two-dimensional carbon material called graphene — a small piece of graphite commonly found in pencils.
Claire is currently doing research through BU’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Since 1977, UROP has helped more than 1,000 students connect with faculty members who want to involve undergrads in research. And for students like Claire, it has opened up a whole new world of discovery — and a greater appreciation for those good old yellow #2 pencils.
