Emerging Playwrights Strut Their Stuff
Festival of New Plays at the BPT
Theater-goers will have a chance to champion emerging playwrights tonight at the 38th annual Playwrights’ Platform Festival of New Plays, where playwrights, directors, and actors join to produce original short plays.
This is the second and final weekend of the festival, and the lineup includes eight works by local playwrights, including Wheelbarrow by Ron Radice, The Promise by Regina Eliot-Ramsey, Koi by Ellen Davis Sullivan, and Round Trip to Monte Carlo by George Matry Masselam (GRS’67).
Every March, a Playwrights’ Platform committee selects scripts to feature in the June showcase at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre. The playwright chooses a director, and the Playwrights’ Platform actors in residence perform the new work.
Audiences also participate by voting for their favorite plays and actors after each performance. The festival ends in an awards ceremony, with Playwrights’ choice awards for best play for each series weekend and audience choice awards for best play, best actor, and best director.
The Playwrights’ Platform Festival of New Plays will be held on Thursday, June 17, Friday, June 18, and Saturday, June 19, at 8 p.m., at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, 949 Commonwealth Ave. Tickets can be purchased online for $17, with discounts available for students and seniors.
