The BU men’s hockey team is poised for number 30.
The Terriers pushed through the first round of the 58th annual Beanpot tournament last night with a 2-1 victory over the Northeastern Huskies. The win earned the BU team a chance to take their 30th Beanpot title, and their 20th final matchup with Boston College, which dispatched Harvard 6-0 in the first game of the evening. The BU-BC game is set for 8 p.m. next Monday, February 8, at TD Garden.
“I thought it was a great college hockey game to watch,” says Coach Jack Parker (SMG’68, Hon.’97). “There were times when each team had a lot of possession in the other team’s zone, a lot of good opportunities. Both goaltenders played great.”
In a hard-fought game that was fast and physical, the first period ended with a score of 0-0, with BU’s defense standing up to two power plays.
Throughout the game, Twitter feeds fired away, with #bubeanpot giving the #beanpot hashtag a run for its money. Katherine Hasenauer, an assistant to the dean of students, delivered a near constant report on the Terriers’ progress, with comments on her Twitter feed including, @sportsgirlkat, “Shatty just rebounded great from a turnover. Chiasson needs to shoot harder, needs more oomph and confidence in his shot.”
Dan Solworth (CAS’06), assistant to the dean of students, ended the first period with @solworth: “Awesome offensive explosion by BU here. Seeing some great looks, just need one to find the back of the net.”
Colby Cohen (CAS’11) found it with 11:37 to go in second period. He fought his way through a scramble in front of the Huskies goal, capitalizing on a power play to score. The goal made Cohen BU’s first 10-goal scorer of the season and allowed the Terriers to end the second period with a 1-0 lead.
That lead vanished halfway through the third period, when Husky Kyle Kraemer bumped Northeastern up to tie on yet another power play. That goal was answered with less than six minutes to go by freshman Alex Chiasson. As John Battaglino, executive director of the Student Activies Office, put it @JohnBattaglino, “BU freshman Alex Chiasson rises to the occasion and drops one in. BU 2-1 with 5 min left in regulation.”
In the first round of the women’s Beanpot tournament, the BU women’s ice hockey team takes on Northeastern at 5 p.m. today at Bright Hockey Center, 79 N. Harvard St., Cambridge.
The BU men’s ice hockey team faces off against Boston College at 8 p.m. Monday, February 8, at TD Garden for the final round of the Beanpot tournament. Harvard plays Northeastern at 5 p.m. in the consolation game. Tickets range from $29 to $39.
