Time Travels: Quick Commute

The Green Line never moved this fast

The time-lapse above captures an afternoon commute on the MBTA’s Green Line B-train, beginning at Blandford Street at around 3 p.m., and ending at Harvard Avenue. The shot interval was one second and the video was encoded at 10 frames per second.

The technique of time-lapse photography has been around for years, but never seems to get old. This year, with the help of mechanical engineering student and photography enthusiast Peter Moriarty (ENG’11), BU Today is bringing you familiar sights in a way you’ve never seen them before.

The key to successful time-lapse photography is to determine how to manipulate time to produce the most interesting images. The photographer must set two key variables. First, how often do you want the camera to record an image? Second, once you’ve gathered images, how quickly do you want to play them?

Got an idea for a time-lapse on or around campus? Share it with us. Think large or small, indoors or out. If we follow through in our weekly series, you’ll get credit, but even better, we’ll all get a great new set of images and a deeper appreciation of where we stand, and live.

    It still seems slow.

Is this really what made the headline on my B.U. Today email?

Add some more flavor to it. Maybe do a long term project of the changing seasons; have the T ride start in Fall and end in Summer. Show me something I don’t/can’t see everyday.

    Second

*agree* with first post, long term would be much better.
also, perhaps investing in a tripod? Shaky camera shots are /not/ attractive…

    Great job Peter! I

    Great job Peter!

I understand how much the Green line sucks and don’t let these others get you down. I’ve seen your work before and you make a great time lapse. Curse you Green line!

    Not impressive

This clearly took less than an hour total to produce. Nothing to see here.

I really like this video! I moved out of the city and the video fondly reminded me of my commute home (I took the same exact route), that I used to dread, but sometimes miss!
