A filmmaker in transition

Watch the video above to hear Shawn Quirk (COM’09) talk about his transition from Rhode Island to BU, what he took away from four years in Boston, and what he’s taking with him to France.
In a few months, Shawn Quirk is packing his bags and leaving the country.
“I might be in Europe for the next five years and not even speak English,” says Quirk (COM’09), a film major and French minor. Actually, Quirk will be using his native tongue as he teaches English in Givet, a village in Ardennes, France — although far less than if he was returning to his hometown of Westerly, R.I.
His undergraduate years were “a really nice transition for me, from growing up in this tiny little state to going who knows where,” he says.
Quirk’s transition mirrors some of the themes of his undergraduate thesis film, The Coast.
“I’ve always wanted to make a movie,” he says. “Now I’m leaving with a movie that I’m happy with — kind of.”
Quirk’s film will be part of the annual Film Production 3 screening, which takes place tonight, May 15, at BU’s Photonics Center, Room 206, beginning at 7 p.m.
