Hakim Walker (CAS’09) and Francis Pina (MET’09) are best friends, roommates, and copresidents of Speak for Yourself, BU’s spoken word and slam poetry group. Today, they kick off a series called “Points of Departure,” conversations with seniors every day this week, leading up to Commencement.
They’ll be graduating Sunday, but it sounds like their BU-based collaboration is far from over. “I love being on campus, even when I don’t have to be,” says Walker. “So I’m trying to stay in Boston. I really hope I can. Most likely Francis will be staying in the city, too. We’ll still be hanging out. We’ll still be crashing Speak meetings, going to shows — and stealing stage time.”
Four creative years can’t be compressed into a few creative minutes, but what does emerge is the strength of a great friendship, using wordplay to create shared visions.
