Men’s hockey parade kicks off in Kenmore at noon Tuesday

Red Sox fans waited 86 years for a national championship. When it came in 2004, how did they celebrate? A parade, of course — with a “rolling rally” of Duck Tour vehicles down Boylston Street.

Celtics fans’ wait was shorter — 22 years. Last year, it was their turn to fill the streets and cheer.

The Terriers ended their own national championship drought on Saturday night with a 4-3 victory over Miami University of Ohio, capping off a great season with BU’s first NCAA title since 1995. Now it’s time for what Kenneth Elmore, the dean of students, calls a “traffic-stopping, jaw-dropping” celebration of the BU men’s hockey team.

Boston University’s own Duck Tour parade will start in Kenmore Square at noon on Tuesday and roll up Commonwealth Avenue. When the parade hits Marsh Plaza, the party kicks off with cake and ice cream, plus speeches from the players and a few glimpses of that much-coveted NCAA trophy. Go BU!

  8. I come from a family of BC, Northeastern and Harvard alums/ employees… let’s just say that Saturday’s game was the main subject of our Easter dinner conversation!

    I have never been so proud to be a BU student. Not only was Saturday’s game played fiercely, it showed the dedication to sportsmanship and perfection of team play better than I think any College Hockey game I can recall. GREAT JOB TERRIERS!!!

  9. I was so proud to watch BU stay determined and not give up right to the end! We have been season ticket holders for years. I watched the game with my 11 year old son and we’ll talk about this game for a lifetime!

  10. With a 10-year old son who plays many sports, I found the teamwork, heart and sheer grit the Terriers displayed in this game offered me a gold mine of life lessons to share with him. Terrific athletes, impressive young men!

  11. I attend BU online and have never set foot on campus (I’m outside of Seattle). But let me tell you, having a little part in an NCAA Championship is pretty d*** cool…Go Terriers!
    I’m off to order a jersey…what to do…red on white or white on red?

  13. Congrats to Coach Jack Parker & the entire Terriers hockey team on their NCAA Championship, and also an Amazing & Outstanding Season!!! I can’t say enough about the team’s display of exceptional sportsmanship, determination and motivation throughout the entire 2008-2009 season!!!
    I only wish I had the day off tomorrow to comeback to Kenmore Square for The Celebration!!!

  14. This is a team that somehow, someway has found a way to win all year long – even when the odds were stacked against them in a number of games. Again, this team – this group of young men found a way to win. Hats off to The BU Hockey Team of 2008-2009 and Coach Jack Parker. Congrats on 800 wins, Jack. —Bruce Tepper CAS ’68

  15. During my son’s four years at BU, I became a huge college hockey fan. I attended last year’s Frozen Four in Denver, and was really hoping to see BU do well this year. My wife, class of 2008 son, and I drove from New Jersey to see 7 games this year, including the NCAA Regional in NH and the Frozen Four. The BU Hockey Team did something that may never be duplicated! What drama, what determination, what a game! Thanks to all of the students in Section 423 who made me feel like a kid again. We witnessed HOCKEY HISTORY! GO BU!

  17. I’m sorry, but as proud as I am that BU won its 5th NCAA hockey title–NO ONE in Boston was warned of this parade! It was decided upon Monday, scheduled for Tuesday! Commonwealth Ave will be closed for a half hour–I’m sure you will find a lot of confused people! Moreover, let’s not forget that when the Red Sox won in 2004 and 2007, the city was well aware of this–the Celtics win the same thing, as well as the Patriots. I doubt many people outside of the BU community and college hockey fans even knew the tournament was going on (Basketball’s March Maddness is more well known).
    Not that I’m cheering for BC, but when the Eagles won last year, they kept their celebration ON CAMPUS in Conte Forum without disrupting anyone or anything. They have just as much as a right to stroll down the streets of Boston as does BU, Harvard, Northeastern, WIT, Emerson, Emmanuel, etc. But no, BC decided to have a celebration where players could meet and greet fans, sign autographs, fans could take pictures with the trophy, etc.
    This is poor planning by the BU Athletic Administration. Clearly they should have chosen to have a rally in Agganis where the players could give speeches, sign autographs, etc. Kenmore Square and Comm Ave are disrupted enough by Red Sox games, but Bostonians are well aware of the schedule and avoid those areas starting at least 2 hours before the first pitch. No one has had any warning and I think this is totally inappropriate by BU to do a rolling rally. You are not taking into consideration the people of the city who have to deal with your students enough! Again, I’m glad BU won, but keep the celebration confided to your own campus and news flash–COMM AVE is NOT your campus!

  18. Great job guys. One of the most exciting hockey games I have ever seen, and that includes 1980 Olympics, and the many many games I attended when I was a student and since. You set a great example for my 10 year old boy to never give up!

    Good luck seniors (in NHL or elsewhere) and to others, good luck repeating next year :-)

  20. This is in response to the lenghthy article by “This is inappropriate!” You are so inconvenienced, but had quite a bit of time to write a long article. I have a feeling that, even if you had had notice, you would be frustrated with the inconvenience of a parade. This parade is timely and deserved. Living in a city can have its problems, but you need to take a deep breath and lighten up. Life is too short to be angry and aggravated by something as joyous as a parade. Go enjoy the day-congratulations to the hockey team!

And I think you have a great point, we should do ANOTHER celebration at Agganis!!!!! Can’t get enough of this team. And if you actually have a car in Boston, you should know better than I do, the backroads. Learn em and love em cuz next time we win I hope we have another parade!!!!!
