  1. I’m appalled by the consequences of Little Brown Bat die-offs that have already occurred in the three years since this phenomenon was 1st detected, AND by the apparent lack of any mobilization around supporting and sustaining the surviving population. While I can appreciate the need for painstaking study of this fungal pathogen’s effect on bats, I am increasingly worried that any eventual “cure” may be so far off that no Northeastern and Canadian bats will have survived to benefit from it!

I urge those wildlife biologists who are now managing to get public attention for this peril, to “compromise their principles” somewhat, by also promoting activities which also show some prospect for sustaining or improving survival rates among the imperiled colonies – NOW! (As examples, flame & chemical cleaning of known hibernaculae, along with erecting sanitary, easily fabricated Quonset-style roosts in front of cave entrances…) Please be willing to temporarily put-aside scientific certainty, to discover even partially effective supports for the dwindling population which may not otherwise survive another winter’s die-off.

Even if we manage to prevent any further bat deaths attributed to the fungus, it will still take decades for the bat population in the Northeast to return to its robust size prior to 2006!

  2. I am in agreement about the plight of these much maligned animals. These bats, and the honey bees, have had such attacks on their populations that it is a tough come-back. In the meantime, we need to devote our energies into practical solutions to save them or risk our own human well-being.
