Sargent Center Officially in New Hands
Lease finalized for running environmental education program at Sargent Center
By Devon Maloney (COM’11)
The Sargent Center, in Hancock, N.H., will now be run by Nature’s Classroom.
The Sargent Center for Outdoor Education has a new lease on life with the signing of a lease with the nonprofit environmental education organization Nature’s Classroom. The 700-acre property in New Hampshire was previously run by Metropolitan College as an educational and retreat space for BU schools; it also offered an environmental education program for middle school students from around the region.
BU announced in January that the center, acquired by the University in 1932, would cease operations as Sargent Center for Outdoor Education as of August 31. Plans were unveiled in June to involve Nature’s Classroom, which will continue with hands-on environmental programs.
“We’re holding down the fort,” says John Santos, Nature’s Classroom founder.
