“What’s All That Purple?”
BU’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer is Painting the Campus Purple to raise awareness for fundraising relay
The Terriers’ official color is still scarlet, but this week, the Charles River Campus will be splashed with purple. The Boston University chapter of Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) is Painting the Campus Purple to bring attention to the organization’s April Relay for Life, a relay race to raise money for cancer research and victims. The goal? To have 100 teams and 1,000 individual participants and to raise $100,000.
“Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event to raise funds for its cancer research, prevention, patient support, and detection and treatment programs,” says Allie Trodella (CAS’09), the vice president of the Boston University chapter of Colleges Against Cancer. “Since many students on campus have not heard of Relay for Life, we will be painting the campus purple during the first week of February. Purple is the ACS’s signature color and the universal cancer color, and we are going to make the campus as purple as possible. Hopefully, overexposure will encourage students to learn more about the relay.”
Trodella started BU’s CAC chapter last fall, along with Siddhartha Sharma (CAS’10), Alan Hoang (CAS’11), Caroline Bridges (COM’09), and Chelsey Kaufman (SAR’11). The group now has 60 members.
Relay for Life will take place from 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, to 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, at the Track and Tennis Center, 100 Ashford St. The event is open to all BU students, faculty, and staff, as well as non-BU students. Relay teams can include up to 15 people, and during the 12 hours, at least one or more individuals from each team will be walking around the track.
To learn more about Relay for Life, or to donate, visit the Relay for Life Web site. You can sign up as a team or as an individual. The kickoff for the relay is on Tuesday, February 3, and Thursday, February 5, at the George Sherman Union Academy Room, from 4 to 6 p.m.
