Women’s XC Team Takes #2 Spot at America East Championships

Andrea Walkonen(SAR’09) won the America East Championship for the second consecutive season,helping the Boston University women’s cross country team finish second out of the nine teams assembled at Maryland’s Oregon RidgePark on November 1. Three top-eight finishers helped the Terriersscore 41 points, second only to Stony Brook, which took home its secondstraight conference title, with 29 points.

The men’s cross country team captured fourth placeout of nine teams. Elliot Lehane (SED’12) and Ken Haltom (CAS’11) turned in the best finishes for the Terriers, who posted a score of 120 points. Stony Brook sophomore Tim Hodge wonthe race, crossing in 25:29.3 to lead the group of 76 runners.

Walkonen navigated the women’s 5K course in 16:48.2, leading a pack of76 runners and finishing 34 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. She has won all three races she’s entered this season. Erin Lagasse (COM’10) finished fourth, in 17:33.1, and Sarah Mosser (COM’10) was eighth, with a time of 17:57.9. Kathleen Davies (COM’11) came in 12th, with 18:11.0, and Katie Matthews (SAR’12) rounded out the scoring with a time of 18:19.9, good for 16th place. Mollie Zapata (CAS’09) (33rd, 18:56.9), Molly James (COM’12) (38th, 19:05.3), Sarah Healy (SAR’12) (45th, 19:36.5), and Madeline Steiner (CAS’12) (46th, 19:37.8) also competed in the conference championship.

The men’s scoring runners all crossed in a close pack.Lehane finished 20th, with a 26:32.7, and Haltom was right behind him, in26:33.2, on the 8K course. David Proctor (SAR’08) was 23rd, with a 26:35.7, David Polgar (SED’10) finished 26th, in 26:47.8, and Peter Gilmore (CGS’10) finished with a time of 26:54.8, placing 30th among scorers.

Also finishing for the Terriers were James Weider (CAS’11) (49th, 27:42.3), Tom McLean (CAS’09) (27:48.4), and Chris Mercurio (CAS’12) (28:15.4).

Both BU teams are back in action on November 15, competing in the NCAA Division I Northeast Regional championships at Van Cortlandt Park in New York.
