Men faced UMBC at home, women met Maine

Sports fans will tell you that every game matters, but the truth is, some games matter more than others. This week, BU Today presents a five-part look back at the games, the players, and the teams that made the difference in BU’s 2007-2008 seasons.

The women’s basketball team started the new year with a dramatic two-point win at home over Hartford, thanks to a half-court buzzer-beater from guard Kristi Dini (CGS’07, CAS’09) in the America East Conference opener on January 5. The Terriers erased a 16-point second half deficit to pull off the come-from-behind victory, besting the team favored at the start of the season to take the conference title.

“This is a great win for our program,” says head coach Kelly Greenberg. “We just refused to quit, and our persistence paid off. I am so proud of our team.”

After the Hawks piled up the 16-point lead, the Terriers made a furious comeback late in the contest. Backed by strong performances off the bench, the Terriers outscored Hartford 35-24. Dini earned a game-high 19 points, all in the second half, and Kristen Folk (CGS’08) came in to score crucial points in the game’s waning seconds. Her jumper with 37 seconds remaining gave BU a four-point advantage — its largest lead of the game — but the Hawks returned the favor with a three-pointer and a jumper to edge up with six seconds left. The clock showed five seconds to go in regulation when guard Christine Kinneary (CAS’09) rushed the ball up court and dished it off to Dini. Despite being guarded by two Hawks, Dini unloaded the game-winning half-court shot, giving BU its first victory over Hartford since February 2004.

The team grabbed a 89-40 victory against Stony Brook at Case Gym on January 19, after dropping a game to SUNY-Binghamton on January 12. The Terriers’ season record currently stands at 9-7 overall and 2-1 in America East action; they will look for another conference win when they visit Maine tomorrow, January 23. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. and can be heard online on WTBU.
