There are 35 comments on Six Questions for Susan Sarandon

  1. Typical elitist Hollywood view. This only proves how out of touch with main stream America these “Actors” are. Lets scare the young people with talk of a draft… please!! Take it from a retired Army Officer with 22 years of service… We will not have, nor do we need a draft! The last thing professional soldiers want is a draft! The last thing the Chiefs of Staff would ever consider is a draft! We are the worlds best fighting force because we are an all volunteer force who WANTS to be there.
When has SS ever done ANYTHING for her country except put out a couple overrated B movies? When has SS ever worried about a paycheck? A mortgage payment? Food for her family? Everything is the Republicans fault… she would rather vote for a racist, flip-flopping, promise breaking liberal elitist with no experience, than for a man who spent his life serving our country and has the experience and wisdom needed to put this country back on the right course.
This is not journalism.. This is the ramblings of an out of touch, me first, Hate America first “celebrity”… Pathetic!

  2. What Susan means by Sarah Palin is not a feminist is that Sarah does not believe abortion is the answer to unexpected or undesired pregnancy. As a godfather to a baby born with Down’s, I can tell you there is great joy my godson shows and I can’t imagine the mother deciding to abort him just because of his birth defect.

  3. Just because Sarah Palin is a conservative woman and doesn’t think like her, this jerk thinks she’s just another vagina that shouldn’t be heard – talk about setting back womens’ rights! At least Sarah Palan is a LADY!

    BL

  4. dear susan, you are awesome. thank you for saying so thoroughly what is true — that feminism is more than being a woman, it’s standing up for women’s rights. and for the record, it’s not jsut vaginas — i don’t want just any d**k in office, either.

  5. Wow…a racist? Who is this person referring to…Obama? I’d love an explanation for that one. And elitist? JM has been in Washington, hobnobbing with every elitist journalist, celebrity or politician he can get his weak vision around. So, he’s a war hero…that does not qualify him for anything other than war. We’ve spent our children’s future on a war based on lies and elitist greed…real elitists, the kind you don’t hear about who get $20 million dollar golden parachoutes, the kind the Bush Ad. is trying to save from the banking wreckage, the kind that want McCain in the White House BECAUSE he has no other vision than to coddle to these real elitists. How does Obama, a man from a single-mother home who worked his way through Harvard and became more than anyone might have imagined through HELPING people equate with elitism? That is the great Rebublican spin that has chase Obama since it was clear he had real ideas that could help the average citizen while threatening the real elitists. Not everything is any ONE’s fault, we all participate a greedy lifestyle that pollutes more per person than any other country on earth. Grow up with the rhetoric!

  6. Why didn’t anyone ask Ms. Sarandon why she and her honey, Tim Robbins, supported a two time killer, Jack Henry Abbott, sitting through his trial and eventually naming their son after him? To me that just shows how ill-conceived this woman’s ideas are, including her criticism of Sarah Palin.

  7. There’s a lot of Susan Sarandon hate out there, apparently. I liked what she had to say and I agree with most of it. It’s unfortunate that Palin is a VP candidate – the last thing I’d want is an inexperienced ignorant homophobic creationist in charge of our country. I’m just sayin…

  8. Dear “Typical..”,
Let’s be honest. The reason that a draft is out of the question is that if white college kids were being conscripted and sent over to Iraq to be shot, there would be mass protests a la Viet Nam. Our “professional” army is made up largely of blacks, hispanics and hillbillies who have far fewer options in life and little political clout. Without them being deployed two, three or more times to the middle east there could be no war. If there were no war there would be no huge government no-bid contracts for Halliburton, Bechtel, Blackwater and other firms well-connected to the Republican Party. When war is as profitable as it is now, you are going to see a lot more of it.
So these kids have to get shot and blown up so that when Dick Cheney leaves office and returns to his job as CEO of Halliburton he and his pals will be richer than ever. Who is the REAL elitist?

  9. Please spare me the rhetoric, when you realize how many of your and my neighbors are losing their homes. I call this fact Pathetic! And we are expected to bail out these Wall Street companies to the tune of 990 Billion Dollars.
Change is needed, and its too bad the republicans don’t have a better candidate than someone who will just extend Bush’s administration another 4 years.

  10. Interesting that the University would give this kind of extensive coverage to someone whose profession is to pretend she’s someone she isn’t. That special performance gift qualifies her, presumably, to profess profound views on geo-political issues, matters of the complex economy, and issues of social construct for the country. Hard to believe!

  11. I completely agree with Susan that Palin is setting back the women’s rights movement a 100 years. The most abominable thing Palin has said so far is that a woman should not be able to choose to have an abortion if she gets raped. As a woman this deeply offends me. If a woman has been sexually assaulted by a man and wants to get rid of the evidence of this experience, she should be allowed to. Cynical, hegemonic, status quo loving men are speaking through Palin, who is merely a puppet.

I also think that politically active celebrities like Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Angelina Jolie, Richard Gere and others are doing ALOT for the country and the world. The contribute millions of dollars our of their own pockets to disaster relief funds and they bring awareness to issues that are kicked under the rug by mainstream media because those stories aren’t ‘marketable’ enough. This shows that they LOVE America, but they just don’t agree with the government. And this does NOT make them unpatriotic. Disagreeing with your government does not make you unpatriotic people!- this is not a communist country!

Lastly, if you are worried about paying your mortgage, paychecks, getting food on the table etc, you should vote democrat because Obama wants to issue a tax break for 95% of America. McCain’s tax laws will benefit the top 1/10th of the rich in America- the politicians, actors, rock stars, CEO’s etc

Even though McCain’s time serving our country is respectable, it doesn’t prove that he can end the war, save the economy and rescue health care when he has voted with Bush 90% of the time.
Obama isn’t a racist- he is for equality of all groups and he grew up poor and worked hard to get where he is. I know that I’d like my President to be smarter than me, even if that means an Ivy League education, because at the end of the day he is taking care of our country and us–an important and difficult job. BTW if you don’t think McCain and the rest of the Republican politicians aren’t elitist you are deluded. Most of them went to ivy league schools too, so don’t use this ‘elitist’ rhetoric against Obama.

  12. Re: “Typical elitist Hollywood” — This is such a tired canard. The right doth protest too much when it comes to obsession with Hollywood and celebrities. Who are your heroes? Ronald Reagan (actor, never served in real life though he once claimed he did or dementedly believed he did), Charlton Heston (actor), Arnold Schwartzenegger (actor, not to mention immigrant who still barely speaks English — somehow acceptable in his case). You know, everybody loves cowboy movies, but a real leader can distinguish between fantasy and reality. John McCain is definitely a step up because he did in fact serve his country honorably. (Sort of like John Kerry, who was wounded more than once but simply never had the misfortune to be captured.) Sadly, in order to become a contender, McCain (like Kerry) has waffled and (unlike Kerry) cozied up to the wacko extreme wing of his party to the point where he has forfeited his old “straight talk” approach and become, more or less…an actor.

  13. I wonder if Susan Sarandon had the responsibility of running a state like Alaska whether she would have an 80% approval rating from the citizens like Governor Palin has. Inability to recognize genuine accomplishment by someone you happen to disagree with politically is a sure sign of your own intellectual rigidity—one could say Sarandon’s own views are “limiting.” (Susan Sarandon was great in Bull Durham by the way.)

  14. How is McCain supposed to change the government when he is just like Bush? His campaign has blatenly lied about things they have said previously, and they think they have the right to refuse to answer any uncomfortable questions pointed at them? Pathetic. He has proposed no changes to our current government, and just because he’s a POW doesn’t make him qualified to be president. And just because Palin has had “executive experience” by putting Alaska $400 million in debt doesn’t make her qualified either. Why doesn’t anyone care about the issues anymore? What about the environment? I’m glad Palin’s daughter had the right to choose to keep her child, unlike the millions of girls who won’t have any say if Roe vs. Wade is overturned. Quality of life for millions will go down and girls will resort to illegal abortions out of desperation. Sure, Obama doesn’t have executive experience and makes all kinds of promises, but at least I wouldn’t fear for my future if he wins.

  15. BU – thanks but no thanks for honoring this windbag.

Love her acting – she should stick to it. Otherwise she’s a big mouth with a small brain attached and not a good ad for a BU education.

  16. “Typical elitist Hollywood view”.

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines an elitist as “one belonging to a superior group”. Elitism has become a bad word these days, and one most frequently used by social conservatives. If there are reasons for Hollywood’s “superior group” status, then it is only sustained by the constant refrain from conservatives. If you dislike Hollywood so much, why do you keep referring to them as superior? It makes one think that perhaps social conservatives are harboring a collective inferiority complex.

“This only proves how out of touch with main stream America these “Actors” are”.

The fact is, there are liberal and there are conservative actors. Wikipedia’s online dictionary defines “main stream” as the “common thought of the majority”. All political data suggest that the U.S. is almost evenly divided. For argument’s sake, let’s say that social conservatives make up 51% (a small majority). That still leaves about 149 million Americans who agree with Susan Sarandon’s political views. In this hypothetical scenario, it would only take 2 million people to make you the one who is, in your owne words, “out of touch” .

“Lets scare the young people with talk of a draft… please!! Take it from a retired Army Officer with 22 years of service… We will not have, nor do we need a draft! The last thing professional soldiers want is a draft! The last thing the Chiefs of Staff would ever consider is a draft! We are the worlds best fighting force because we are an all volunteer force who WANTS to be there”.

With all due respect for your 22 years of military service, what professional soldiers and Chiefs of Staff want is irrelevant. The USA still maintains the Selective Service System, which is an independent federal agency within the Executive Branch of government that reports directly to the president. Under this system, Congress and the President have the power to authorize a draft – not Chiefs of Staff. Is it unlikely that the Congress and President would do such a thing? From my perspective, no more likely than Congress and the President authorizing the U.S. invasion of a sovereign country that did not attack us. Of course, that unlikely event occurred in 2003, when they authorized the illegal invasion of Iraq to dismantle weapons of mass destruction that the country did not possess. So it is at least possible that a U.S. military draft could be reinstated. Given the social, political and military views articulated by many conservative politicians to the press in the last several years, it may even be likely – but only if these particular politicians are elected to office.

“When has SS ever done ANYTHING for her country except put out a couple overrated B movies”?

Well, just like “main stream” Americans, she pays her taxes. Taxes that support our country’s military, police, firefighters, emergency response teams, public education and social security for the elderly and handicapped. It’s likely that she donates significant amounts of her income to charitable organizations, as is the case with most “Typical Hollywood elitists”. We do know for a fact that she has been an Ambassador to Unicef, the world’s leading children’s organization, and continues her work with them. Unicef is dedicated to educating, immunizing and protecting children around the world, and is sponsored by countries throughout the world including the U.S. As a face and voice for this laudable organization, she does her country proud. As for your opinion that all she’s done for her country is act in B movies, it should be pointed out that she’s been nominated 5 times by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as best actress and won the award once. While this fact is irrelevant to her political views, I’ll take the objective opinion of this organization in gauging Ms. Sarandon’s acting abilities over yours. Plus I happen to like most of the movies she’s done.

“When has SS ever worried about a paycheck? A mortgage payment? Food for her family”?

We may never know if she personally worried about a paycheck, though it’s irrelevant. Her dedication and volunteerism to poor children around the world is indicative of someone who cares about the well-being of others – especially the poorest of the poor.

“Everything is the Republicans fault… she would rather vote for a racist, flip-flopping, promise breaking liberal elitist with no experience, than for a man who spent his life serving our country and has the experience and wisdom needed to put this country back on the right course. This is not journalism.. This is the ramblings of an out of touch, me first, Hate America first “celebrity”… Pathetic!”

No, everything is not “the Republicans fault”, though they have had a big hand in the direction the country has taken in the last 8 years. Your assertions about (presumably) Barack Obama and John McCain are subjective and too ill-defined to comment on. Lastly, your assertion that this piece “is not journalism” is debatable. Journalism is the profession of writing or commincating, formally employed by publications and broadcasters, for the benefit of a particular community of people. Given that Susan Sarandon had been honored with the Bette Davis Lifetime Achievement Award, it certainly seems like this piece meets the definition of journalism and that your assertions of her being a “rambling, me first, hate America first celebrity” are without merit.

  17. Why has BU aligned itself with the political views of a nut case like Susan Sarandon? Sarah Palin has never shot an animal from a helicopter so why does BU permit this woman to commit an overt act of defamation of character? What ever happened to responsible reporting? Do the liberal young journalists at BU think ethics do not apply to them?

The statements of this woman suggest that she does not even understand that we are representative constitutional republic not a pure democracy. The liberals do not respect those parts of the constitution like the second amendment which they fear, while trying to hide behind the parts that serve their special interests. She sees herself as a “little flashlight” trying to stir up trouble but she should really be sued for defamation of character and arrested for inciting a riot.

  18. Again an elitist leftist using scare tactics and rude, in-your-face talk! I can’t believe these people acting as more smart and educated. What are we teaching our next generation? McCain didn’t mention anything about a draft. Palin didn’t force any of her social beliefs on people of Alaska. It’s a choice between two different approaches to government: McCain’s transparent, clean, small, people-driven government vs. large, socialist, Obama-driven government. If we want to be distinguished by innovations and freedom, vote McCain. If not, vote Obama. That’s the choice in my opinion.

  19. Susan Sarandon please…give me a break. Is she a scholar? does she even have a GED? at least Tom Cruise has his GED. It kills me to think that people like her mock conservatives, but fail to see the fact that liberals with her views keep more minorities down than conservatives.
First, they are the ones who want to keep migrants working for slave wages, while accusing the right of racism for wanting to send illegals back.
Liberals like her keep young black children in sub standard schools because their teachers union buddies dont want these kids to have a right to choose a better school, therefore getting a better education.
Liberals like her ignore genocides in countries like Iraq where they are still uncovering mass graves, and DArfur because blanketed anti war retoric does not allow fighting for them would be agaist their pacifist beliefs. Everyone should be against all wars, but with that in mind be willing to fight and support the troops of that war to save lives.
I thank god she was not around during the civil war…i would still be in chains.
I love how the ever evolving definition of feminist changes because of the abortion issue. What makes Palin a feminist is her ability to break the glass ceiling becoming Alaska’s first female Govornor…Palin also has the highest approval rating 80% as a govornor. I have never seen a politition with this high of an approval rating that is still alive. Palin took on good ole boys, without feeling she had to act like a b**ch to do it.
The double standard here is staggering.
I really hope that my tuition money was not used to have this bre and chablis lear jet liberal speak to the young and indoctrinated while waiting for her next movie deal. I work very hard to afford this school and it would really piss me off that any of it went to her.
When college can become the voice of both liberal and conservative thought, then I would have more respect for the choices those who live on campus make for us in inviting a guest. Can we invite someone like Michael Steele, oh I forgot he is a black conservative which means he does not get a voice on campus. The last time he tried to speak on a college camus he had oreo cookies thrown at him…how cruel.

  20. Susan Sarandon was nice enough to take time to talk to students who were interested in hearing what she has to say. She made no claims to be an authority figure on the topics, but merely is using the spotlight that is on her to point out issues that she finds important.
I thought she was very personable and answered everyone’s questions.
A lot of what she said is from her experience in being a political activist and not an actress. People need to relax and not take everything everyone says so seriously. Why take time out of your day to criticize someone you do not even want to listen to in the first place.
SS mentioned that a lot of the problem was that people were uninformed, and it seems from some of these responses, that she is correct. RE: What a Loser:
Your response is so completely ignorant. First of all, Sarah Palin (not Palan) may be a lady, but that has nothing to do with what she believes in or stands for. Being a lady is a separate thing from being a feminist and fighting for women’s rights. Before you go around insulting SS who is making valid statements about someone, why don’t you learn how to spell Sarah Palin’s name.

  21. I am blown away by Susan Sarandon’s ignorant and out of touch remarks about Sarah Palin. Palin is an accomplished and articulate woman who lives and fosters independence, not dependence. She set some goals that many thought a woman would never attain in her state and achieved those goals on her own strengths and determination. If that isn’t the truest example of an independent feminist, I don’t know what is! Hunting moose and taking part in outdoor activities is purely a by-product of the Alaskan environment where she was raised. Perhaps Susan Sarandon needs to get in touch with how “real” people live, instead of just spouting off the Hollywood brain wash.

  22. Frankly, I think having her interview on BU Today is an insult to people’s intelligence. I graduated from BU and really enjoyed my experience there. It’s a travesty that her vitriolic words are allowed to be on this website. Based on your last poll question choices regarding Election ’08, it is apparent that BU fully supports Barack Obama and has drank the koolaid. In order to show the differing opinions, why not feature Bill O’Reilly on BU Today?

  23. Thank God I’m not the only even SLIGHTLY right-leaning one on campus who thinks this woman is a twit. Why are these the only people who get a real forum here? By the way, I don’t believe in evolution either, Susan. What does that very serious clue say about me?

  24. The truth of the matter is that this is really; do or die election as Sarandon tried to convey to young people. We are dead nation walking if McCain wins as the country is nearly bankrupt and the earth in danger of global warming and McCain/Palin are in total denial. It scares me to read these comments as the people who posted comments against Sarandon are totally clueless about what is really going on in this country.

  25. To all of you raving that Sarah Palin has an 80% approval rating from Alaskan citizens, will you please remember that Alaska only makes up about .2% of our country’s people?, That’s point two percent just in-case you didn’t see the decimal point. She was also the mayor of Wasilla! She was the mayor for 6,300 people. Sarah successfully ran .002% of our country’s population for 4 years. Jee yeah she must know what she’s doing.
    http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/02000.html for the record.

But maybe she’d be better off running one of these: http://thingswithapproximatelyasmanypeopleaswasilla.com/

  26. I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight….

    * If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you’re “exotic, different.”
    * Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story.

    * If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
    * Name your kids Willow , Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.

    * Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
    * Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.

    * If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.
    * If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 9,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.

    * If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.
    * If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.

    * If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
    * If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible.

    * If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America’s.
    * If you’re husband is nicknamed “First Dude”, with at least one DUI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

    OK, much clearer now.

  27. Well, she made sense. I am surprised to see how much nonsense can people write in reaction to sense.
It’s almost like a knee-jerk reaction from the Sarah Palin supporters.

  28. Reading all the comments most of them have been personal against SS. She has stated her opinion. She did not attack Palin as cruel as the attacks are thrown at her.
Palin was picked because she is a woman and not for her qualifications. The republican party ran the charge to transfer the wealth of america into the hands of a few and then set us taxpayers back years by placing us 7 trillion in debt. And now they are going to bail out , the financial companies that were handing out billion dollar bonues year after year while most of use working folks , worked hard to make ends meet.
This election is more about where your tax dollars should be spent. Vote McCain and it goes overseas.. vote Obama and it stays in America to be spent on americans.

  29. I’ve always admired Susan Sarandon for speaking out on issues that she’s passionate about, be it anti-death penalty, police brutality (Abner Loima), immigration and politics. I’m so glad that she takes a stand and uses her platform to raise awareness for those who won’t do it on their own (seems like some of these commenters need to do some research themselves). Unlike other celebrities who’d rather just gloat in their celebrity status and brag about their wealth, Susan actually wants to leave a legacy where she can be remembered for more than her talents. She’s an American and she has every right to speak out on issues as the rest of us do.

On another note it’s amusing and down-right ludicrous that people call Obama an elitist when his actions show the contrary (community fund-raising, choosing not to work at a big law firm, running on the democratic ticket to serve all Americans, not just the 1 percentile of wealthy, and relating to the everyday blue-collar worker and not just Ivy-leaguers)

    Go Obama 2008!

  30. As a point of clarification, during her question and answer session, Susan made a point of saying that people ask her constantly why they should listen to anything she says or what weight her opinion holds over anyone else’s. She went onto say that her response is always that no one has to listen to or care about anything she says because she’s just one woman who is making her opinions known, and on the same note, no one should care who she is sleeping with. Susan made it very clear that her opinions should not be held on any sort of pedestal, that she is simply stating her thoughts because she has the means of being heard. Anyone can listen if they want to, or ignore her if they don’t.

Everyone who responded to this article with a “What qualifies her to say…” response should keep this in mind. Also note BU and BU Today is not giving her extreme attention on campus; She was present at a special one night event, which was followed by a student dictated question and answer session. The students in the audience solicited her opinion when they asked all these questions. BU Today then covered the event as they do most events on campus. BU didn’t make it “Susan Sarandon’s Political Views Day.” Everyone should relax.

  31. listening to her speak was so enjoyable. she has her own opinions and wasn’t pushing them on any of us. the fact that she cares so deeply about politics and worldly causes is something to be admired. whether you agree with her or not isn’t an issue. no one really cares.

  32. As a source of higher learning who cares what Sarandon thinks…………. I for one am curious as to why BU would solicit her views as being superior to Palin’s or anyother right winger
