The eighth-ranked Boston University men’s ice hockey team will look to build on a two-game winning streak this weekend when they face archrival Boston College at Agganis Arena on Friday, December 5, and again on Saturday, December 6, at BC’s Conte Forum.
The Terriers — 9-4-0 on the year, 4-4-0 in Hockey East, and with a perfect 5-0-0 record in nonleague play — are coming off of a strong week for several players. During last weekend’s 4-1 victory over St. Lawrence, Chris Higgins (CAS’09) became the 75th Terrier to hit 100 career points; more recently, sophomores Colin Wilson (CAS’11) and Kevin Shattenkirk (CAS’11) were named to the 2009 U.S. National Junior Team and will participate at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, in Ottawa in December and January.
The Eagles remain a formidable opponent, however, with last year’s NCAA championship in hand, and a season record of 9-4-1, 5-3-1 in Hockey East. While the Terriers have won the bulk of the rivals’ 242 meetings, BC won last season’s conference series, 2-0-1, and trumped the Terriers in the first round of the Beanpot. Eagle freshman Jimmy Hayes was also selected to the 2009 U.S. National Junior Team, and Boston College head coach Jerry York was named a candidate for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year award by staff writer Kevin Armstrong.
The hockey rivals met six times in 2005-2006, with the Terriers taking four wins; five times in 2006-2007, with three wins going to the Eagles; and four times last winter, resulting in three losses and a tie for the Terriers. Currently, BC is third in the Hockey East standings, and BU is seventh.
The Terriers play the Eagles on Friday, December 5, at Agganis Arena at 7:30 p.m. The game can be watched on CN8, heard on WWZN 1510 AM, or viewed online with GameTracker. The weekend’s second game is on Saturday, December 6, at Conte Forum, Chestnut Hill, Mass., at 7 p.m.; it can be watched on ESPNU, heard on WWZN 1510 AM, or viewed online with GameTracker.
