GSM Students Share Expertise with Nonprofits
Shaun Reynolds (GSM’09) gave nonprofit organizations budgeting tips at SMG’s Link Day
Graduate School of Management students may have not earned their M.B.A’s, but they have a lot of knowledge to share, which they did last month at the annual MBA Link Day. Students teamed up with small- to medium-size nonprofit organizations and provided free managerial advice that the groups could not have afforded otherwise. BU Today is highlighting a few of the more than 50 students who participated.
Shaun Reynolds (GSM’09) and four teammates worked with two representatives from the Cohasset Center for Student Coastal Research (CSCR), an organization closely linked with Cohasset (Mass.) High School that teaches students about the coastal ecosystem. The group develops a variety of projects for the students, such as water testing and wetland and tidal pool monitoring. With a tight budget of $50,000, the five-year-old company was seeking advice about sustaining itself, growing, and obtaining grants.
“We instilled the importance of using an accounting system and other means of tracking financials to sustaining and growing their business and programs,” Reynolds says. The team found an affordable way for CSCR to purchase the accounting software Quicken, trained the organization’s representatives to operate it, and created capital and expense budgets for CSCR to use for planning future programs.
“I feel it is very important for nonprofit businesses to make sure they will be able to sustain themselves in the future,” Reynolds says. “I found the experience to be educational as well as fulfilling and would like to volunteer in the future.”
