Campus Eats: Z-Square

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner + beer and wine menu = a winner

If there’s one restaurant destined to become a Boston University staple, it’s the new Kenmore Square eatery Z Square. The restaurant, at the intersection of Blandford Street and Commonwealth Avenue, was introduced to Kenmore Square this winter, when it replaced the celebrated (but very short-lived) Campo de Fiori. Z Square brings to BU something that no campus competitor has: an all-encompassing breakfast, lunch, and dinner selection with a beer and wine menu to match.

During the spring semester, Z Square became a Sunday morning tradition for me and my friends — their seasonal fruit waffles and Nutella crepes, served all day, satisfy those cravings for a homemade breakfast that the dining hall just can’t fulfill. Their lunch menu, in keeping with classic American-eclectic themes, offers the ZLT — a killer twist on the BLT that goes heavy on the bacon and throws in a few slices of avocado — and the Z Club, a triple-decker classic club on a delicious multi-grain. Make sure to choose either their fries, which are perfectly seasoned with large salt crystals, or, for a more daring dining experience, their refreshing green apple slaw. After 5 p.m., the mood at Z Square changes with the addition of table service and their pleasing dinner menu, which includes a complex mac ‘n’ cheese and a variety of hearty entrees.

Overall, Z Square has proven itself to be a dependable, classic American addition to the BU dining scene. Try it for the relaxed atmosphere, flat-screen TVs, the young, friendly wait staff and the pure pleasure of a seat outdoors and an ice-cold Blue Moon straight from the tap.

Z Square is located at 580 Commonwealth Ave., next to the Blandford T Stop and across the street from the School of Management. Visit http://www.z-square.com/Kenmore/News/ or call (617) 425-0101 for hours, reservations or more information.

Great food all the time. Interesting not odd like some pretensious places that cost too much anyway. I like the clean casual setting too.
