What does it say about Coolio that so many BU students still remember the first time they heard the now-classic “Gangsta’s Paradise”? That hearing it mentioned, so many spontaneously break into a rendition of the song?
It seems that the ’90s rap star is still with us, and on November 14 he was with us in person at the GSU Metcalf Ballroom. Sponsored by the 2009 Class Gift Committee, Senior Week, and Student Alumni Council, Coolio performed immediately after the 7 p.m. men’s basketball game against George Washington at Agganis Arena. Tickets for the concert were handed out at the game, and you had to have attended the game to get a ticket.
As the video above shows, you can take Coolio out of the limelight, but you can’t take him out of his fans. Remarkable, really, considering that most BU undergrads were less than 10 years old when “Gangsta’s Paradise” was released in 1995.
