Women Hiking for Women Healing
Wilderness Heals, a three-day pledge hike through the White Mountains, raises money for a Boston-based battered women’s shelter.
For the past two years, BU Today writer Vicky Waltz has taken part in Wilderness Heals, a three-day fundraising hike that benefits the Elizabeth Stone House, a Boston-based feminist alternative mental health facility and shelter that provides residential and community-based services to women and children escaping violence. The hike, an annual event that takes place in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, has raised more than $1 million since 1995.
In January, Waltz and fellow hiker Monica Chopra launched the Women Hiking for Women Healing blog, intended largely as a recruitment tool for the summer hikes. In addition to providing registration materials and information about the hike, the blog invites former hikers to share personal stories, reflections, and photos from previous years.
