The Art of Capturing Light

Michelle Chahine (CFA’09) shares her experience in Lebanon through this sunset photograph.

Graphic design major Michelle Chahine (CFA’09) learned about Lebanese culture while studying at the American University of Beirut — and also made sure she caught the light and shadows through her photography.

"The photo is of a statue in the town of Jbeil, historical Byblos. Lebanon, especially the coast, is truly breathtaking at sunset," she says. "I photographed this beautiful town on the sea around sunset, combining two of my favorite things about Lebanon in this photograph."

The work, called Sunset in Byblos, was made into an 8.5" x 11" print. Chahine shot with a Canon Eos 320, with a zoom lens on film.  She had it developed and scanned in the negative. To get the photograph, she set her aperture on 5.6 and her shutter speed at 2000.
