Last week, Google made headlines for refusing to comply with a federal request to hand over its search records. The Justice Department argues that the search queries will help defend the constitutionality of the Children Online Protection Act, which prevents children from obtaining pornography online; civil liberties groups say the request violates consumers’ privacy and sets a dangerous precedent.

T. Barton Carter, the chairman of the mass communication, advertising, and public relations department at the College of the Communication, talks about what the dispute means for Internet users.
