Meet Sasha Packer
Following in the footsteps of her grandmother and mother, Sasha Packer is the third generation to attend BU.
Name: Sasha Packer
From: Holliston, Massachusetts
School: School of Hospitality Administration
Major: Hospitality administration
What convinced you to go to BU?
As a lifelong Massachusetts resident, I insisted on only applying to colleges in the Northeast, although I was partial to New England states. Before the decision deadline, I was stuck between two schools: BU and Cornell University, but I obviously chose to stay close to my hometown heroes and avoid entering enemy territory. I am proud to be a third generation BU student, following in the footsteps of both my grandmother and mother, who obtained undergraduate degrees from BU in 1954 and 1975. I will also be joining my sister, who is currently working towards her master’s degree at BU. Furthermore, the School of Hospitality Administration appealed to me with its hands-on curriculum and enthusiastic professors.
What are you most excited about coming to college?
I’m excited about almost every aspect of college. Moving out of the suburbs and entering the big city is incredibly appealing, because I will be exposed to a more diverse population of students who each have something different to offer the community.
What courses are you most interested in taking?
I’m most interested in the hospitality courses within the School of Hospitality Administration, especially the Fundamentals of Food Service Management course. I have absolutely no cooking skills, and this lab-based class will hopefully provide me with the knowledge necessary to make edible meals.
What kinds of activities do you want to become involved in?
I have been figure skating since I was five, so I definitely want to join the BU Figure Skating Club. I also want to become an active member of Hillel. I’m sure that once I become better acquainted with campus life, I will join more organizations or as many as I can given the amount of time I have available.
What will you miss most about home?
Given that I am only 45 minutes away from home, I’m sure that I will not be as homesick as some of the other students who will be traveling hours away from their homes. Even though BU is just a T ride away from home, my parents and I have compromised about the number of times they are allowed to visit me and vice versa.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am proud of a project I started in my community a couple of years ago that has grown enormously since its beginning as a National Honor Society project. I collected over 500 prom dresses, shoes, and accessories for local underprivileged girls. I was featured in the local newspaper and on a Boston news channel.
Why did you want to become involved in the Facebook site BU2010?
I wanted to become involved in the BU 2010 Facebook group so that I can proudly represent the School of Hospitality Administration and inform the other students at BU what the hospitality school is up to.
Has it helped you make friends?
I think that Facebook overall has helped me meet other class of 2010 students who share similar interests with me. Seeing the entire class together on one site has definitely solidified the reality that we are all going to BU together in the fall.
Will you meet up with some in person when you get to BU?
I definitely plan on meeting up with some of the students I have met online when I get to BU, especially those who share common interests with me.
