BU Today

Meet Katherine King

Katherine King hopes to go with the tropical ecology program to the Ecuadorian rain forest and the Galapagos Islands

Name: Katherine King
From: Foster, Rhode Island
School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Anthropology and biology with specialization in ecology and conservation

What convinced you to go to BU?

The overseas tropical ecology program in Ecuador convinced me. Being able to work hands-on in the rain forest and Galapagos is amazing. Also, at BU, even though the student body is large, the campus is compact and all of the students seem to really care about their community and school.

What are you most excited about coming to college?

Being able to meet all different people from around the world and experiencing different cultures really excites me. Moving from a small town with one restaurant, a gun shop, and many churches is a huge difference from the big city! It will be a relief to not have to travel 20 minutes to a gas station or the mall!

What are you most nervous about coming to college?

I’m nervous that I will try to do too much and get overworked from all the fun! There are so many different groups, events, and classes at BU that I want to do them all now. I have to keep reminding myself that I still have three more years after this one to do it all in!

What kinds of activities do you want to become involved in?

I love, love, LOVE to dance! I cannot wait to take modern and Latin ballroom for the first time, and to also join a dance group on campus to refine my group jazz and tap skills.

What is one of the goals of your first year at BU?

Quiero aprender espanol! And to be able to lift my leg up over my head again in dance! A year back I became ill with mononucleosis at a dance competition, so I had to give up dance to let my body recover, and now I am ready to start training again.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I love the arts. I am the dance choreographer for Swamp Meadow Community Theatre in northwestern Rhode Island. Also, I performed a flute solo as part of the song “Cool” from West Side Story with the Ponaganset High School Wind Ensemble at the Grand National Adjudicators’ Invitational in Chattanooga Tennessee, as the only band from the Northeast. Last spring we also won the CGConn National High School Band Competition and performed a premiere piece with the Boston Brass! The members of the Boston Brass are amazing artists and gave us all personal advice about music and life.

What will be your first stop when you start exploring the city of Boston?

Chinatown, because I love experiencing different cultures. Plus, I know to just look for the giant Citgo sign if I get lost!

How are you spending your summer vacation?

Believe it or not, I sell lawn mowers and tools! I also love going rock climbing at Rhode Island Rock Gym. This is the last time I will be with my friends until Christmas break, so we are making the most of it!
