Tea Time is back! Join us on Tuesday, October 16 at 4 p.m. for our first session, featuring Jasmine Oolong Tea.

Important: starting this semester, the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground will no longer be providing paper cups. Please bring your own mug and leave it with us! We’ll put your name on it and keep it here so you don’t have to carry it around.

Tea Time

Our Tea Time program will be going on hiatus. On Tuesday, October 16 at 4 pm, Tea Time will be reintroduced with a relaunch event. We will continue to offer teas from around the world and there will be opportunities to connect with fellow BU community members over a pot of tea and information about where each tea comes from. Until then, tea will not be available, including during normal operating hours of our center. This is the perfect opportunity for you to find a great mug! Thank you for understanding and we hope to see you on October 16.

Irish Breakfast Tea

March 28th, 2011 0 comments

The Emerald Isle is our next destination on this semester’s tea club express. Ireland is the world’s largest per capita tea consumer, with each person drinking at least four to six cups a tea per day!

On Monday 3/28 from 3:30 – 5 PM, the Howard Thurman Center Tea Club will be serving Irish Breakfast Tea (as it’s known in America). This combination of hearty black teas from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Assam (India) will give you a boost to get through the afternoon. In Ireland, most people drink their tea heavy with milk and sugar. You can have it however you like.

Come join Tea Club and grab a cup of hot Irish tea. All are welcome!

Join us for Persian Tea

Nowruz Mubarak and Happy Persian New Year!

Nowruz, or the celebration that marks the first day of Spring, dates back to 15,000 BCE and retells of the Battle between the Persians and the citizens of Atlantis, whose city was destroyed in a storm. The Persians prevented the Atlantians from conquering their land and commemorate it on this day.

On Monday, the Howard Thurman Center Tea Club will be serving Persian Tea in commemoration of Nowruz. Nowruz literally means “New Day” and is celebrated amongst many traditions and cultures today. The most significant part of the celebration is the festive spread that is laid out on a table in every Iranian home. Known as Haft-e-Seen (Seven S) it comprises seven things symbolizing different concepts peculiar to spring and the New Year like apples symbolizing health and beauty and vinegar symbolizing age and patience.

Since it’s not spring in Boston yet, come grab a cup of hot persian tea to keep warm! Come by Tea Club on Monday 3/21 from 3:30 – 5:00 PM to have some tea and persian sweets!

Haiti: One Year Later

February 28th, 2011 0 comments

It’s been a year since the tragedy that took the lives of 300,000 Haitian people and left over 1.6 million displaced. The situation has left women especially vulnerable to sexual violence and rape.

Please join the Howard Thurman Center Tea Club, Amnesty International, the Haitian Cultural Association and the Vagina Monologues for an evening of discussion on the dangers that women in Haitian camps face as they struggle to regain their stability. The Vagina Monologues will also be performing a spotlight piece on Haitian women and selling tickets at a discounted price for their March 5th performance. To top it off there will be some wonderful Haitian Food and Funky Music.

Please join us on Monday 2/28 from 3:30 – 6:30 PM as we keep the love alive for Haiti. For more event info, email Student Ambassador Annie Rupani at:

Tea Spots in Boston

November 2nd, 2010 0 comments

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes forget that BU is in Boston.  It’s so easy to get trapped in this BU bubble that once you actually realize that Boston is right on your doorstep…it’s basically a revelation.

So believe it or not, right in your own backyard there are tons of cool tea spots where you can get your tea fix when it’s not Monday tea-time at the Howard Thurman Center!

Here’s a list of a few places that I’ve found:

– Tealuxe @ Harvard Square:

– Teavana @ Prudential:

– Espresso Royale:

– Infusions Tea Spa:

– Dado Tea:

– Swan’s Cafe:

– Boston Public Library:

– KooKoo Cafe:

– L’Aroma Cafe:

Feel free to email me at if you’ve found any cool tea spots of your own!
