What is Agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia is a fear of being in places or situations where escape might be difficult or embarrassing. Individuals with agoraphobia may also fear situations where if they did have a panic attack or panic-like symptoms, would have a difficult time getting help. Individuals with agoraphobia may fear being outside the home alone, being in a crowded place, standing in a line, being on a bridge, or traveling in a bus, train, or automobile. Individuals with agoraphobia either avoid these situations completely or endure them with high levels of distress/anxiety. Many individuals require the presence of a companion when placed in fear provoking situations. If an individual’s life becomes restricted to the point of avoiding normal daily activities, it is time to seek treatment.
