Kuali Research, a service for proposal and award tracking and reporting, is expanding to include the Proposal Development and Conflict of Interest modules. The Proposal Development module will provide researchers and research support staff the ability to electronically create, review, approve and submit sponsored research funding proposals. The new module will also include a built-in budget creation tool as well as system-to-system proposal submissions through grants.gov and research.gov. Integrated with the Proposal Development process, the new Conflict of Interest module will provide a new way for investigators to submit disclosures electronically, link disclosures to specific research projects and save financial entity information for future disclosures. These two new modules will be implemented together in a phased rollout, to allow for feedback and improvements along the way.

The implementation of the two new modules will provide the following benefits:

Improve visibility and communication

  • Proposal Summary Form information is collected as part of the proposal creation process.
  • Principal Investigators (“PIs”), Department Administrators (“DAs”) and Office of Sponsored Programs (“OSP”) will be able to work on same proposal concurrently.
  • PIs, DAs and OSP will have access to the system and current status of proposal.

Reduce administrative time

  • Electronically route complete proposal packages for approvals.
  • Electronic submission to federal agencies (Grants.gov and Research.gov). No need for NIH Assist or NSF Fastlane.
  • System links data between projects and their associated disclosures.

The project has recently kicked off and project timelines are still being finalized. However, we hope to pilot with a few departments by the end of 2017 and will continue with our rollout in 2018. We are in our early stages of design. We will be looking for departments involved in research to participate in feedback sessions, early testing and pilots. Please reach out to Jen King, IS&T Program Manager to participate.
