Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client – vpn.bu.edu

The easiest VPN client to use on both Windows (7, Vista, XP) and Mac OS X is the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. Because this client is web-based, there is nothing you need to install or configure manually. To use the AnyConnect client, you simply log in and wait for the connection to launch. A light client is downloaded when you connect, and disconnected when your computer shuts down. You can browse the web as you normally would, once the connection has been established.

Important Notes:

  • Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client is intended for off-campus use. It will work as a method of securing the on-campus wireless network, but use of BU (802.1x) is highly recommended. (Unlike with the VPN, once 802.1x is configured, it may not require a manual connection each time you want to use wireless.)
  • The light client download can take a little longer the first time you use it, but subsequent connections should progress more quickly.
  • If you have Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or newer, you also have an easy-to-use built-in option that does not require any client download. However, there are some limitations with the built-in Mac client and we recommend the use of the AnyConnect client. The built-in Mac client uses a IPSec protocol to make a VPN connection and this type of protocol is commonly blocked at hotspot locations such as airports and hotels. The AnyConnect client uses both IPSec and SSL (which is less likely to be blocked) to establish a VPN connection.
  • Are you using the VPN specifically to run Outlook (Exchange) from off campus? Try Outlook Anywhere instead!
  • If you are prompted for the server name, use vpn.bu.edu. Once the VPN is setup, you will use your BU login name and BU Kerberos password to log in.
