Backup Schedules for Current Customers:
If You are a current backup customer you can check your backup schedule.
New and current backups customers can download backup software.
- UNIX machines must participate in the University’s Global UID system
- WINDOWS machines must be part of the Boston University Active Directory Forest
- Temporary administrative access is needed to install the client software.

File Restoration Tips and Help:
- Backups start at midnight and usually finish before 9AM. Backup tapes are subsequently sent to an offsite storage facility. If your restore requires a backup that is older than one week, it is likely that tapes will have to be recalled from offsite. There may be delivery charge associated with recalling tapes. We will notify you if your restore requires tapes from offsite and what options/costs are available.
- Typically, we complete restores within 24 hours. However, the restore could take longer depending upon: (1) size of restore (large amount of data and/or files) (2) if we need to recall tapes from offsite (3) if the information in the restore request is incomplete or inaccurate.
- Sorry, we can’t! Typically, we don’t keep backups longer than 1 year. (we do take snapshot backups in May and December and retain these for 2 years). If you create/remove files within a backup cycle, there is no backup (e.g. if you created/removed files after one backup and before the next scheduled backup).
- If you don’t own the file or have group access, you must have your system administrator complete a lost file request. Otherwise, we cannot restore files that are not owned by the requestor.
