Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is Microsoft’s implementation of NetBIOS Name Service (NBNS). It is a name server for NetBIOS computer names.


WINS allows Microsoft client computers to contact other computers by resolving a NetBIOS name to a network (IP) address.

What to Expect

This service normally will be available 24 by 7 except for standard change windows, as described in IS&T’s standard policies, procedures, and schedules for making changes.


Systems need to be running NetBIOS and be configured to use WINS for name resolution

Getting Started

WINS servers are provided automatically to any system on campus using DHCP.  For other systems, see WINS Server.
