Boston University DNS Servers

Boston University maintains several sets of DNS servers for varying purposes.   There are four main sets that clients may need to reference.

Charles River Campus

On the Charles River, computers running DHCP are automatically configured to use the correct set of DNS servers.  For manually configured systems, the primary DNS servers are:

  • DNS01.bu.edu (128.197.253.183)
  • DNS02.bu.edu (128.197.253.120)
  • DNS03.bu.edu (128.197.253.254)

These servers are only accessible from systems on the University’s network.  Computers running outside of the University network should be configured to use the DNS servers provided by their local networks.

Medical Campus

On the Medical Campus, computers running DHCP are automatically configured to use the correct set of DNS servers.  For manually configured systems, the primary DNS servers are:

  • DNS01.bumc.bu.edu (155.41.254.250)
  • DNS02.bumc.bu.edu (155.41.254.251)

These servers are only accessible from systems on the University’s network.  Computers running outside of the University network should be configured to use the DNS servers provided by their local networks.

Domain Registration

Boston University maintains three servers which provide primary name resolution to systems throughout the Internet for various domain names, such as bu.edu. If you are registering a new domain, please contact us before registering and listing these servers.

  • eDNS01.bu.edu (128.197.253.182)
  • eDNS02.bu.edu (168.122.254.62)
  • eDNS03.bu.edu (192.12.188.130)

These servers are non-recursive, which means that they will only respond to queries for domains officially registered to the University.  Computers should not be configured to use these servers for DNS services.
