Members of the BU community who have logged in to a thin client machine in the BU Common @ Mugar (or other locations) can remotely access the files stored in the MyFiles directory, following the steps outlined on this page.

Please note that your MyFiles directory provides 250 MB of file storage. Files will not be backed up, so files that you delete cannot be recovered. We recommend keeping additional backups of important documents.

Windows:

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the BU network either directly via Ethernet, wirelessly (via 802.1x), or remotely over a VPN connection (login at http://vpn.bu.edu).
  2. Next, launch Internet Explorer and replace the URL address (including the http:// part) with the following:
    \\myfiles.ad.bu.edu\Users\<username>>
    Be sure to use the back slash, and note that <<username>> is your BU login name (without the @bu.edu). Then hit Enter.
  3. Provide your login credentials when prompted: Username: ad\<username>
  4. Once you have connected to your MyFiles directory, you should be able to move files down to your computer simply by dragging them.

Mac OS (10.6 or newer or 10.5 required):

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the BU network either directly via Ethernet, wirelessly (via 802.1x), or remotely over a VPN connection.
  2. With Finder as the foreground app, select Connect to Server… from the Go menu.
  3. For Mac OS 10.6 or newer, type smb://myfiles.ad.bu.edu/Users/<<username>> in the server address field. If you are using Mac OS 10.5, type smb://myfiles.ad.bu.edu:139/Users/<<username>>. Note that <<username>> is your BU login name without the @bu.edu.
  4. Provide your login credentials when prompted. Username: <username>
  5. Click Connect.
  6. Once you have connected to your MyFiles directory, you should be able to move files down to your computer simply by dragging them.
