There are four different options available to students for local telephone service.  After you decide which plan works best for you, please contact Verizon at 888-339-7306 to sign up for service.  In addition, if you are interested in making outgoing long distance calls, you will also need to sign up for a long distance plan with Paetec by visiting the Communication Services office at 111 Cummington Mall during regular business hours and presenting your Boston University ID.

Before leaving campus or if you are moving within residence halls, be sure to disconnect your local service by calling Verizon at 888-339-7306.

Service Options

Measured Service Option 1: Cost per month: $12.93*

  • All calls are charged on a per message and per minute basis as Zone 1 and Zone 2 calls. Calls to Zone 1 and Zone 2 locations cost $0.01 for the first minute and $0.016 for each additional minute. Unlimited calling within the BU Campus is included.

Measured Service Option 2: Cost per month:  $13.43*

  • Like Measured Service Option 1, but provides security for your line by requiring your Paetec PBN to be entered for every call.

Contiguous Service: Cost per month:  $20.45*

  • Unlimited calling to Cambridge, Roxbury, South Boston, Brighton, Allston, Brookline, Charlestown, East Boston, and Boston Central.
  • Calls to other Metropolitan Boston Area exchanges are billed as Zone 1 and Zone 2 calls. Calls to Zone 1 and Zone 2 locations cost $0.01 for the first minute and $0.016 for each additional minute.

Metropolitan Service: Cost per month: $34.82*

  • Unlimited calling to all of the Contiguous Service exchanges as well as Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Braintree, Burlington, Canton, Chelsea, Cohasset, Dedham, Dorchester, Everett, Hingham, Holbrook, Hull, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Lexington, Lincoln, Lynn, Malden, Mattapan, Medford, Melrose, Milton, Needham, Newton, Norwood, Quincy, Randolph, Reading, Readville, Revere, Roslindale, Saugus, Somerville, Stoneham, Wakefield, Waltham, Watertown, Wellesley, West Medford, West Roxbury, Weston, Westwood, Weymouth, Winchester, Winthrop, and Woburn.

* Note: Prices shown do not include federally mandated charges, which include a $6.42 end user charge, a $0.75 local number portability charge, and a universal service charge which varies every month but is around $0.70.

From Boston Central, the Zone 1 includes:
Boston Central, Brighton, Brookline, Cambridge, Charlestown, East Boston, Roxbury, South Boston, Arlington, Belmont, Chelsea, Dorchester, Everett, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Malden, Medford, Melrose, Milton, Newton, Quincy, Revere, Saugus, Somerville, Watertown, and Winthrop.

From Boston Central, the Zone 2 area includes:
Braintree, Burlington, Canton, Cohasset, Dedham, Hingham, Hull, Lexington, Lincoln, Lynn, Needham, Norwood, Randolph, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, Waltham, Wellesley, Weymouth, Winchester, and Woburn.
